Arguably the founder of ethnography, Fray Bernardo was an early colonist and Franciscan missionary in New Spain (México). He tried to gain more humane treatment for the colonized indigenes even as he studied and wrote about their culture. His writings are an invaluable source of information about pre-colonial peoples of the New World.
