A newbie to sailing might not know how to use a winch, let alone know what the heck a winch is.  But a seasoned sailor, or at least someone who has been on the boat a handful of times, participating in races with more responsibility than rail meat or being the squirrel, should know how to use one. It’s probably one of the first and most important things to learn about--if you don’t believe me, go check out this article by Sailing World.

Season 4 | Episode 79 | Problems in Paradise; Sailing to Button Shell Beach 

On this episode we head off from Los Angeles bound for Button Shell Beach near Whites Anchorage on Catalina Island.

Button Shell is just about exactly half way between Two Harbors and Avalon. Our plan was to get away from the city and all of the fireworks so Camille's Cattle Dog, Mr. Steady, could have a peaceful holiday.

We encountered more problems on this trip than any other trip I have ever done. From a blown out sail to anchoring problems, to a failed bilge pump and a slipped stern anchor..... And the issues continue into the next few episodes documenting this trip.

Sailing (PLS disregard bc personal rant)

Why are drysuits so fucking expensive I mean honestly like I am 16 year old girl with a job that pays minimum wage who just wants to be able to sail in the spring but I need a drysuit WHICH COASTS MY FIRST BORN CHILD UGH

School: *refuses to fund the sailing team*

School: Well, the fact that it costs money to sign up for sailing makes it difficult for us to say that it is a school sport

It's kind of sad how sailing is such an exclusive, privileged world. It just makes the community and sport I love about as diverse as wonder bread.

you know something is wrong with your life when it is below freezing and you have to go sailing. i also don't really have a choice because my team qualified for this event and i'm the a fleet skipper, which just so happens to be the hardest fleet.
