Family emblem depicted in a marble inlay on the Rucellai Sepulcher in the Church of San Pancrazio in Florence, Italy. Design by Leon Battista Alberti. Photograph by Sailko.
This symbol is known as interlaced annulets or Borromean rings, and was used by the Houses of Sforza and Borromeo (hence the name). The source identifies this emblem with Lorenzo de’ Medici. The House of Medici is usually represented by one of several geometric arrangements of five or six roundels accompanied by one or three fleurs de lis, making this an anomaly.
