Saint Francis: What is your favorite animal and why? Probably cats? I’m flexible on favorite animals. (My least favorite animal is easy: All Insects, Especially Ants.)

Saint Catherine of Bologna: Do you enjoy art? What kinds? I love cathedrals and grand churches, if that counts as an art form. The duomo in Milan and the Oxford Oratory are two of my favorite places in the world.

Saint Francis de Sales: Do you enjoy writing? What do you like to write? Answered!

Saint Elizabeth of Hungary: Do you enjoy baking/cooking? What is your favorite thing to make? Do I enjoy it? Sure, when I’m good at it! I am an extremely picky eater - which I am trying to correct - so I honestly don’t know how to make many things. I just learned how to make tilapia, which I’m now obsessed with. I’m pretty good at desserts, but that only half counts. My boyfriend’s very good at cooking, so once we’re not long distance, I intend for him to teach me how to cook things.

Saint Thomas Aquinas: Did you/do you go to a Catholic school/public school/homeschool and did you like it? I was homeschooled until 10th grade. In 9th grade, I took 2 classes at my local Catholic high school to test it out, and then I went full time in grades 10-12. I loved homeschooling; it was perfect for me as a child and a pre-teen. At the time, my mom was a certified teacher with a flair for discovering and working with reading disabilities. (When I went to high school, my mom got her master’s degree as a Reading Specialist, and she is still accruing certifications for different programs and curricula. She’s the best.) My dad is an historian and natural storyteller, so I was frequently regaled with historical anecdotes - notably, the Civil War and the Defenestration of Prague. 

Mom noticed rather quickly that I had a gift for memorization, so she did not hesitate to assign me piles of things to memorize. She also had a gift not only for writing, but for teaching writing; I credit my mom and 2 of my college professors for how well I can write. 

I am very grateful that I went to a “”normal”” high school. I needed to realize that I was a bit of a know-it-all, and that I couldn’t publicly correct teachers (you can do that when your teacher is your mom). I needed a lot of self-awareness, which I don’t think I would have gotten had I been homeschooled throughout high school. 

However, homeschooling was one of the most formative experiences of my life, and I can never thank my parents enough for teaching me at home.

Saint Jerome: What is your favorite book and why? The Lord of the Rings is an old, dear friend, of course.  The Man Who Was Thursday by Chesterton is one of those friends with whom you’re very close, but you have no idea why, but you miss them already.  In This House of Brede is the best friend who loves you back, and you feel completely charmed and unworthy of such love.

Saint Joseph of Cupertino: Do you enjoy flying/have you ever flown? I fly frequently! My boyfriend and my immediate family are out of state, so I fly at least a few times a year. I used to enjoy flying, but in my wizened old age, I find that I don’t enjoy feeling abruptly uprooted for a weekend. (Flying is extremely convenient, though.)
