19th century chromolithograph after one of Sir Edwin Landseer’s most famous paintings, “Alpine Mastiffs Reanimating a Distressed Traveller” and which was painted by the artist when he was 17. It shows two of the celebrated dogs rescuing a lost traveller, while the monks are rushing from the hospice to help the person lying in the snow. It’s arguably the sole reason St Bernard’s were thought to wear small barrels around their necks as they saved lost souls. The image stuck, no doubt helped along by Swiss Miss commercials and classic cartoons.
