St-Germaine was the last character I chose to pursue in the original game. To me personally, he want the most handsome or the most interesting character of the four. He appeared many years older than Cardia and I didn’t expect them to be a good fit. I might have mistaken him for an NPC at the very beginning (I’m sorry St-Germaine fans!) I approached his route like chore to unlock Lupin’s route, yet St-Germaine’s story surprised me so much! It is the only route so far with a scene that almost made me cry!
Cardia’s connection with St-Germaine is so special. He understands her on a whole other level compared to the other possible protagonists. As immortal, non-human beings, their connection is not just about mutual respect and acceptance of the darkness in each other’s pasts (which is the case with her relationships with Victor, Van, and Impey), but about having something in common that no one else can ever understand. In her current condition, before her poison is cured, St-Germaine is the only person who can touch her because his regenerative abilities will keep him from sustaining any lasting damage and he can take good care of her, observe her to evaluate her wellbeing in an extremely intimate way that the other characters cannot really do. He is the one who can tell her that she is human in a way that matters deeply to me, because he has been both human and instrument, not to mention he has lived for thousands of years and has gained experiences and knowledge in his long life to understand things on a different level and can assure her that she is definitely human because of her kindness and innocence and desire for human connection.
Something I really appreciated in this after story is St-Germaine’s encounter with Lupin in the garden not in the presence of Cardia.
Cardia is an awesome protagonist, but she is not the brightest and not very perceptive, so it’s a breath of fresh air when Lupin suddenly appears to knock some sense into a very self-pitying St-Germaine and chastises him for doubting if Cardia truly loves him, going so far that he even suggests that he should steal Cardia away!
I love the both of them even more after this scene!
What this is in effect doing is eliminating the prospect of Lupin becoming a rival to St-Germaine. I know that some of the other sequels entertains the possibility of a polyamorous relationship between Cardia and two of the males heroes , but here it seems to me that that option is out the window since Lupin has determined to step back and leave these two to alone to live out their happy ending.
I found that compared to the other storylines (V^2 and I), Lupin’s feelings for Cardia are more apparent here. On more than one occasion in the first game, Lupin hints to Cardia that he also has feelings for her and if she so chooses, he would take care of her. I wonder why Lupin’s feelings are made more apparent in this route than all of the others... The after story is indeed very short, but the end is very satisfying! I love how much these two lovebirds love each other!
Love St-Germaine with such a genuine and carefree smile on his face! I’m so glad he got the happy ending he so deserves!
