Quebecois band, Saint Mathias, are totally kick-ass
If you don't know the artists known as Saint Mathias, you should. And probably will very soon. The band formed in the end of 2012 in Quebec City where they have been focusing on a more spontaneous and organic approach to their brand of experimental/instrumental music. And the best part? They are making a name for themselves all on their own.
"It all started in the fall of 2012. It started as jam sessions at our drummer's place and then some songs emerged and took form. It has always been and will always be based on [improvisation] since we think the essence of the project lies in its spontaneous approach to making music", explains guitarist Keven Cloutier.
"We don't want to over think chord progressions, structures, [or] time signatures cause we think the best of what we can create comes from what we feel and want to communicate through our instruments while jamming. That's how we connect", says Cloutier.
The band consists of pianist Ben Marcoux, guitarist Keven Cloutier, bassist Étienne Lebrun and Roger Cournoyer on drums. When asked why they chose to exclude lyrics from their debut, Cloutier remarks: "we have always wanted the project to be instrumental. In a way, it brings the four of us back to the same level as there is no frontman [which] allows people to really listen to the feelings expressed through music and not forced meaningless lyrics that are 'necessary' to be conventional".
Their debut album, which was just recently released on Bandcamp.com, was recorded over a weekend. This gives the album more of a session feel rather than a series of songs that were carefully crafted to be sold. "We recorded it all by ourselves and we truly believe in doing all we can by ourselves", says Cloutier. That not only means the recording, but also the artwork, promoting themselves and booking gigs.
So what's the next step for Saint Mathias? Cloutier explains, "eventually, we'd like to integrate visual to our songs. It could either be animation, videos, or live painting. We would also love to make music for movies or television. But these are all just ideas for now".
