Tell me literally anything you want about Maverick and Goose
It is clear they care about each other and worry what the other thinks. Very rarely in stories where a person says "You are the only family I got," do they really mean it. It always feels like poor writing trying to state how the character is feeling rather than show it.
But to Top Gun's credit, Maverick really is shown to fit into the Bradshaw Family. He is carrying Bradley when they leave the airport! Most kids that age don't let just anyone do that.
OH OH. I also really like when Maverick doesn't include Goose in the MIG story, Goose corrects him and Maverick
SAYS SORRY AT ONCE.
And corrects himself!
Then goes on to say "It was a nice photo." And just UUUGHHHH
Goose and Maverick as a dynamic goes a long way to making Maverick much more likeable for people.

Benji and Ethan time, gonna go with an established relationship for a change.
taking care of the other when sick or injured
"Ethan, you shouldn't be moving." Benji called from the front door.
Ethan who had just gotten up from his spot on the couch froze like a deer in the headlights, before sitting back down. He had thought Benji had left but apparently he had not.
"I thought you had left." Ethan said sinking back into the couch.
"That was a trick, I don't have to leave for another hour." Benji said making his way back over. "I wanted to see if you would actually stay on the couch like you promised me that you would." Ethan frowned as Benji looked at the bandages that were wrapped around his bicep. "The stitches are still holding, good."
Ethan sighed, "Benji..."
"Great; here comes the excuse. Ethan, you promised me."
"I just" Ethan groaned, running his hand through his hair. "I might...I might be in more pain then I lead you to believe."
Benji's expression shifted from one of anger to one of worry in a the blink of an eye. "What do you mean?"
"I was just gonna lay down on your bed, I am sure your couch is comfy but maybe not for a man who had been shot."
Benji was quiet for a moment, then bent down, helping Ethan to his feet. Mumbling, "Stubborn Man, why didn't you just say something before?"
"I didn't want to let-"
" Ethan you had been shot, you are allowed to ask for things you need. I don't expect you to be superman!"
"You don't?" Ethan asked as they made their way to Benji's room.
"I am past putting unrealistic expectations on you, last time I did that you almost drowned." Benji bit his lip, "You don't need to put on a brave face for me."
Ethan groaned as Benji helped him down on the bed, "I, didn't want you to worry about me." He said sheepishly.
"I always worry about you, but right now I am the one protecting you." Benji said before placing a kiss on the top of Ethan's head. "I know I am not dating Superman. I don't want to be dating Superman. I love you."
Ethan smiled up at Benji, "You really don't want to be dating Superman?"
Benji scoffed, "Oh please, you are much more handsome than Superman."
Ethan laughed as laid down on Benji's bed. "Good to know I don't need to be made of steel."
"You never had to be Ethan." Benji smiled, running his hand through Ethan's hair. "You never had to be."
Send me a number and a character and I’ll post headcanons!
Ah yes the boy that if you think about his past, the history of the era and the context of top gun, you get really sad.
9. Childhood headcanon
After Pete Mitchell lost both his parents at such a young age he was put into the foster care system where he never stayed long in each home. The longest he stayed in one home was 11 months. The shortest was 6 weeks.
Pete's drive to join the navy was not only for him to find a way to reconnect with his past, a way to link himself back to a time where people cared about him but to give himself a more stable life than the one of his youth.
How much did you plan for Hometown Skies before writing it? How did the ace-spec Viper plot come about? How far in the process did the Maverick name tie in happen?
Thanks so much for asking about my fic : Hometown Skies
How much did you plan for Hometown Skies before writing it?
I tend to write chapter by chapter. So planning was very minimal. Now I do a lot more planning, might be why I have slowed down.
I started a notes page right around when I started writing chapter 2.
Chapters 1-2 were started in March
Chapters 3-5 were started in April.
Chapters 6-7 were started in May
Chapters 8-10 were started in June.
Chapter 11 was started in September.
Nah, htskies was very much an idea I came up with because of something I wrote in another abandoned wip. Actually let me pull up the quote:
Warning for references to suicide
"What about your mother?" Viper asked, sounding worried.
"Si- Viper, she got sick and passed away in '68. I grew up in foster care."
"I.. I am sorry. I didn't know."
"That's alright. She was suffering for a while, it was her time." And she might have ended things herself but Maverick decided to keep that fact close to the chest.
"I am sorry I didn't know because, had I known, I would have just adopted you myself."
Maverick let out a surprise laugh, "What? Viper, you, you aren't serious."
"I am very serious. Duke Mitchell was my best friend, I would have given a shit about you. From the minute I saw you I will admit I have been having regrets on not raising you. But I thought being with your mother was best."
"She...she did her best. But she...she wasn't well, physically, or emotionally."
The way Maverick said emotionally hung in the air.
And I decided, " Wait hold up, that's actually a really interesting idea! I'm going to write that!"
How did the ace-spec Viper plot come about?
Good question. Honestly it was most likely a combination of things.
I wanted Ace Spec rep, since I am also Ace Spec.
I liked the idea of Maverick and Viper being similar but also different. As queer folks they both experienced queerphobia, but of different types.
So the harassment Viper would face wouldn't mean being discharged, at least not after he got married but it was hell for him and this trauma did and does affect how he acts around his bisexual son. His reactions are very much charged by trauma and it's damaging all of them, ain't that grand? /s
Also for the ace pilot puns. He is a flying ace :)
(side note I really need to redo Viper's set)
How far in the process did the Maverick name tie in happen?
YA KNOW, I was just researching meanings of words and I saw the definition of maverick and originally i found “orphaned calf” and so I am like… EXCUSE ME? There is no way that is THAT perfect, Turns out it doesn’t mean that and it is more ANY unbranded open range animal, cows and horse. But like…
WHY, why are there two calf names??? DID ANYONE YEARS AGO REALIZE THIS? WHY DID THE MOVIE DO THIS AND NOT A SOUL BROUGHT IT UP?
Anyway it happened at around late April, around the time I started chapter 5. I did fly by the seat of my pants a lot of the time.
