sakuremi is a good ship because you can have both brutal violent I WILL KILL THEM ALL LIKE A GOOD HUNTING DOG WHILE MY MISTRESS WATCHES WITH A SMILE FUCK HUMANITY sakuremi but you can also have like cutesy tea parties and remilia acting like she’s five because she didn’t get a cake she wanted or something stupid sakuremi. both variants work and they work really, really well. it just depends on what you’re in the mood for. you can also go for cuter and less violent forms of heavily devotion focused sakuremi! like stories where sakuya goes to ridiculous lengths to fulfill one of remilia’s really dumb requests even though she knows that remi’s sent her on a wild goose chase. and there’s other ways still to do the ship but like the fact that we can go from extremes of EDGE to extremes of cute is one of the big appeals of it to me. i’m not like. restricted to just one ship dynamic. i’ve got lots of them to pick from and everyone’s got different ways of portraying it. which isn’t to say sakuremi doesn’t have tropes. the reason i keep a running count of how many sakuya vocal arranges are edgelordy sakuremi stuff is because that’s like. an observable running trend. comics meanwhile have this EXTREMELY prevalent story line wherein sakuya grows old and dies or we’re just in general handling the stress of the fact that as a human sakuya can technically grow old and die. it is to such a point where a more recently made comic, the author and artist wrote in their note that they understood that it was incredibly cliche but honestly they just wanted to try their hand at a classic sakuremi story. i get a bit tired of those stories at times honestly, but i do enjoy them a lot in concept and it’s fun to see how individuals portray these exactly. so even when the ship is being conventional there’s a variety to be found and that variety is the fun. and honestly this is part of what i like about touhou ships in general. there’s conventions. there’s common stuff that a lot of people make use of or make responses to but there is a variety to be found. i don’t find this sort of variety in the ship works of some other stuff i like a lot. either because the work we’re working with has a very defined dynamic for the characters or because the fandom has just collectively decided that this is the one way we’re going to do this ship. touhou ships though feel like a more open playing field. like we’re freer to do weird shit and shit that goes against the grain. the fact that i’m able to go and find a variety of creators and find like a variety of distinct ways sakuremi has been portrayed is neat. the fact that i’m able to create my own distinct style of it is also really neat. we’re not drowning in a sea of facts. we’re just kind of whimsically sailing along and running into other people at times before continuing on our own way.
