Hank has videos of him and Cole. Mostly just Cole, but sometimes he’s featured in them as well. Like Cole’s first steps, first time he says ‘dada’, them playing catch, lots of laughing and good times.

When he first approaches, crosses the threshold into the wide berth of empty space around her, Mai eyes him, tracks his movement as he slides into a seat not quite directly opposite her. She keeps watch from the periphery but otherwise doesn't deign to acknowledge his presence at all; rather, she feigns normalcy and continues to push food around on her tray, occasionally taking a small bite with deliberate slowness. She spends the agonizing first minutes on high alert, ready to slide her chopsticks between her fingers, improvised hand arrows to hurtle at his weakest points; the splintered, brittle wood between her fingers promises a quick end to any brawl, and a point he won’t soon forget.
Except, he makes no move beyond mirroring her tense show with far more ease. It takes her longer than she'd care to admit to realise what he's doing, that his act is meant for the suddenly interested gazes of the perimeter guards, a display meant to divert suspicion of any inmate plotting. Only once the gazes fall away from them entirely does he speak in a hush, more to his tray than to her.
For someone whose behavioral record is equally as long and distinguished as her own, earned through — loud — brazen displays of protest, he’s not totally devoid of tact. She’s not sure if this display of strategy surprises her more than the sales pitch but, then, she supposes there’s a reason he’s here and, evidently, it extends beyond his bone-deep hatred for their captors.
She flatly inspects his profile for a fraction of a second before redirecting her attention back to her bowl of thin water and stale rice. At his side, huh?

He doesn’t know that she already was someone’s lackey, a prisoner of a different kind. Only a few months ago did the princess come to coerce and collect her dutiful minions, a mission in mind. Already it feels like half a lifetime ago. Still, it begs the question: what’s his mission, what does he need the back up for ?
Ordinarily, she might turn the problem over herself, examine all angles... Here, though, it hurts to think around the relentless dull throb that’s made a home in her skull, the way she feels like an unfolded piece of origami, worn thin and barely there.
Maybe that’s why she caves early, or maybe it’s the promise of at least one less person with her name scrawled at the top of their shit list. Regardless, after a drawn out pause, she heaves a sigh.
❝ But... I guess I’m listening. ❞
