Islam is about tolerance and respect, says Salleh
KOTA KINABALU, April 21, 2015:
Sabahans are very concerned with recent developments with regard to religious sentiments in the.country, be it the forced removal of a cross on the Taman Medan church facade, the seizure of Bahasa Malaysia Bibles or the use of the word Allah.
Sabah State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said he was concerned that this would take Malaysia down a very dangerous path that might soon cross the point of no return with only a slippery slope ahead.
Stressing that Muslims needed to reflect on Islam’s history, he said the best example would be Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattāb, one of the most historical figures in Islam.
“The Muslims, under Umar, conquered Jerusalem in the 630’s and it is reported that when the Caliph entered Jerusalem, the first thing he did was to fulfil his obligatory prayers and the Bishop invited him into the church to pray.
“Umar, however, refused and chose instead to pray outside the church. The reason he gave was that he did not want future generations to misinterpret his action and to think that Muslims had taken over or possessed the church,” Salleh wrote in his blog titled “The protest against the cross”.
Umar, Salleh said, respected the sanctity of the Christian church. He did not want it to appear as if Muslims had displaced Christians and had taken over their place of worship.
He also definitely did not command that Christian icons such as the cross be removed from the church.
Salleh said Christians had in fact banned Jews from entering Jerusalem, but it was Umar who lifted the ban so both Jews and Christians could coexist side-by-side in peace in what was now considered the holy land to all three faiths.
“(But) Muslims tend to forget their history. Or maybe they never studied Islamic history.
“The protest two days ago in Selangor regarding the cross on the church is not what Islam is all about. It is certainly not what Umar taught us and was not Umar one of Prophet Muhammad’s most trusted companions?
“This is what happens when Islam is abused in the interest of politics. And the protest against the cross is not the first and only incident that is troubling this country,” he concluded.

Give Najib some face, Salleh tells Dr Mahathir

Talking about freedom of speech, democracy and right to criticise, a Sabah lawmaker believes that there should be some room left for one to maintain one’s dignity.
“When a person is stripped of one’s dignity, then one would want to defend it to the death,” said Sabah State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak.
He said former Prime Ministers such as Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Hussein Onn and his father, Onn Jaafar, and in more recent times, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, fondly known as Pak Lah, resigned as the nation’s top leaders because of their dignity.
Pak Lah, he added, once said that Malaysia was a country with first-world infrastructure but third-world mentality and Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when interviewed soon after his retirement said almost the same thing but in different words.
“When asked what was his greatest regret in 22 years as Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir replied his greatest regret is he could not change the mentality of Malays.
“He said the Malays are too feudalistic, and sighed why can’t the Malays be more pragmatic like the Chinese,” Salleh wrote in his blog titled “Dr Mahathir’s attack on one’s dignity”.
He said Dr Mahathir himself had summed up the Malay psyche very well when he said Malays were very feudal, which might be good, if it concerned dignity, or bad, depending on the circumstances.
The former chief minister added when one over-attacked someone in the west, one would say: give the person some space, while in the East, we would say: give the person some face.
He said “giving face” is very important to the Chinese, because letting them lose face would leave you to face a very brutal repercussion.
“(So) Is Dr Mahathir allowing Najib some face in the way he is attacking the Prime Minister?” he asked, referring to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the criticism he had been receiving from Dr Mahathir of late.
Salleh added the former Prime Minister had admitted that the issue was not the Crooked Bridge or the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M), but the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
He said Najib had already asked the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to investigate the affairs of 1MDB, and the results of these investigations were yet to be announced.
Salleh, however, noted that by the way Dr Mahathir was currently acting, he had already decided that there was something wrong, and that MACC or the PAC’s findings would only be acceptable if the verdict was “guilty”.

A PKR lawmaker has poured cold water on claims by former Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak that the people would reject those who played the race and religion card.
Penampang Member of Parliament Darell Leiking said this was because of late, Sabahans had seen how racial and religious politics had crept into the state’s political system.
He added that Sabahans were now suspicious of each other, citing complaints that many of the positions occupied in the civil service were not merit-based but a “preferred demography or even religion”.
The PKR vice-president also said that the ideal that Sabahans were a non-racial and non-religious-inclined society was gone as the people had submitted themselves to the dividing forces prominent in Peninsular Malaysia.
For Sabah to stand tall, Leiking advised the people to look into how divided current society was and not be bothered by the different races and religions.
“We should seriously stand firm and not allow ourselves to be dictated by any discriminatory agenda, suspicions or political divide.
“We must reset ourselves into a truly multiracial Sabah which we once were,” he told The Rakyat Post.
He, however, admitted that Salleh’s comments were interesting as he was an Umno member, a party Leiking said were adamant about Malay rights and had used Islam for its political existence.
Salleh, in his blog posting yesterday, claimed any party that played the race and religion card would be rejected by voters.
This, he added, was why West Malaysian-style politics was not welcome in Sabah.
Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, on the other hand, said that Sabah and Sarawak had always been harmonious societies that rejected racialist or religious extremism.
“Seeing the increasingly ugly polarisation along racial and religious lines in the peninsula, Sabahans are becoming more self-conscious of their own identity as Sabahans.
“As such, opportunists playing the race and religion card will not be welcome in Sabah,” Yong, who was also once a Sabah Chief Minister, said.

A former Sabah Chief Minister wants the matter of “who is more Malaysian” to be put to rest and is instead encouraging people to work on how to face challenges that lie ahead.
“It is probably time to put this matter to rest and no longer argue about who is more Malaysian and who came to this country first.
“Instead, we should discuss how to face the challenges ahead of us, especially the economic challenges and the bigger worry of terrorism that, according to the IGP, threatens to land on our own doorstep,” wrote Sabah State Speaker Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak in his blog, titled “Chinese ‘pendatang’: how East Malaysia looks at the issue”.
He was commenting on Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem’s Chinese New Year message today, touching on the most sensible thing regarding the Chinese “pendatang” rhetoric that is straining race relations in Malaysia.
Adenan also thanked the Chinese for their contribution to the state and added that the community should rightfully regard Malaysia as their home, adding: “You call Sarawak your home, and indeed this is your home, just like for those from many other races.”
Salleh said Adenan’s statement also applied to Sabah as Sabahans have said the same thing many times in the past: that Chinese are as Malaysian as any other race or ethnicity.
“We have Malaysian Chinese who are descendants of those who came to this country more than 500 years ago and Bumiputeras whose ancestors came here only about 100 years ago or less.
“Hence, how do we measure who has more right to this country if the date your ancestors came here is used as a yardstick to determine who is more Malaysian?” he asked.
Salleh believes the yardstick to use is when Malaya gained independence in 1957 or when Malaysia was formed in 1963, whereby whoever was already in Malaysia, especially those who were born in the country, are Malaysians and equal to one another.
“Anyway, if the reason for this rhetoric is because the Bumiputeras feel threatened, then rest assured there is nothing to worry about because the Federal Constitution of Malaysia protects the special position of the Bumiputeras,” he said.

Malaysians no longer care, says former Chief Minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 10, 2015:
The back-to-back, never ending controversies surrounding the nation’s diverse races appear as if the public no longer care about one another.
Sabah speaker Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak pointed out the difference between the modern day society and the past, that is its level of tolerance towards racial-related issues.
“Malaysia has never seen this level of problems before this. In the past, Malaysians have always been more tolerant of one other and, even if there were issues, Malaysians have always been able to sit down to try to resolve these differences.
“Now it looks like they no longer care. They just lash out with absolutely no regard for the result of what they say,” said the former Sabah Chief Minister in his blog sskeruak yesterday.
He provided examples of the controversies that arose one after another, including Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s statement calling for Malay consumers to boycott Chinese traders who refused to lower the prices of their goods in line with the drop in fuel prices.
“Even before the controversy can die down, a new one regarding the conversion to Islam of the under-aged Sabahan schoolgirl erupts and, even before that can be resolved, we now have the concerns being expressed by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) regarding Jakim’s plan to distribute one million Qurans to non-Muslims.
“Will Malaysia ever see the end of all this race and religious tension? There seems to be a series of issues cropping up non-stop, one after another, and if it not this it is that, which is bringing Malaysians to the brink of discontentment and intolerance.”
Salleh added that the East Malaysians were concerned with the situation that saw most of the nation’s multiracial society becoming more ignorant of the negative effects that can be triggered by their words and actions.
He also called for “sanity” and responsibility to be restored in the hearts of all Malaysians, urging politicians to set the tone at the top by toning down racial and religious rhetoric that can only lead to disruption.
“We would like to call for Malaysians to be more responsible and not ‘play politics’ at the expense of peace and stability.
“This requires political will. We cannot act only once the damage is done as history has proven that once it reaches that level it is very difficult to turn back the clock.
“I only hope and pray that there are enough sensible Malaysians who do not like what they are seeing and would like to see Malaysia as what it used to be back in the old days when Malaysians strove to live with one another regardless of race and religion.”
