Here are 29 Common Singing Mistakes Identified and described By Me. Let me know which ones you can identify with. If any of these describe your voice or the voice or somebody you know please contact me for a possible appearance on my new web radio show. Record your voice here: SpeakPipe.com/WVMP and we may feature you on our Sunday or Wednesday show.
1. A vibrato that sounds like a SHEEP.
2. A vibrato that sounds like the old church lady…slow. really slow.
3. Pitchy – Singing above or below the correct pitch.
4. Pitchy 2 – A singer sings the melody correctly but they can’t seem to match the octave or the key. I’ll sing it in one octave and they’d repeat it back to me in a lower or higher octave.
5. Pitchy 3 -Sliding on and off pitch. At some point they may be singing dead on pitch but either in the beginning, middle or end of a phrase it all goes out the window.
6. Fear of flying – Singer sings in full voice and switches over to their false voice prematurely to avoid belting at a higher range.
7. Straining – Singer does not approach the higher range correctly and as a result the voice sounds “strained” and often resembles the sound of a cat dying slowly or the sound of someone who was just pushed off a really tall building, the sound of TARZAN…or the sound of someone who was just set on FIRE…you get the idea, right?
8. Singer’s voice sounds HEAVY.
9. Singer’s voice sounds as though it is muffled or nasally.
10. Singer makes odd sounds and tones that don’t fit the song such as curling the voice, growling, fry notes, etc.
11. Singer makes odd sounds and tones (2) such as pitchy and breathy singing that sounds nervous and/or out of control.
12. Singer sings BIG songs using false voice.
13. Singer only has ability to sing using ONE boring tone.
14. Singer sings with no feeling or emotion that reflects the song’s message or the singer presents the wrong or opposing message.
15. Singer is pretty good, except they tend to go overboard with their runs and riffs..Like the ones that OVER-SING songs like the National Anthem.*
16. The singer is bending notes upward or downward causing their audience to feel sick, dizzy or ticklish. Kinda like country twang but much more dreadful.
17. Too much yodeling or the yodeling is too strong or pitchy.
18. Too much of ONE thing (such as use of just one tone).
19. Singer that can’t seem to sing in the correct rhythm.
20. Singer’s voice sounds too thin, even when they are belting.
21. Singer has limited range and doesn’t feel comfortable singing either lower, higher or both so they just stay in their comfort zone. Many singers sound great in their comfort zone but they can’t succeed as a professional singer or in a competition because of their limitation and lack of vocal variety.
22. Inability to hold notes or a singer who can’t calculate where or how to breath during a performance.
23. The “talking” singer…this is the singer who is stuck in limbo. Are they talking, rapping or singing? Singing is sustained speech.
24. The whiny singer. I think we know what this sounds like:). Lets put an end to it today!
25. Singer doesn’t have the skills to be creative. These singers often sound
great singing a cover tune or singing along with a cover tune but when you take all this away they are not comfortable. If you give them an original piece of music to sing or a song they are not familiar with they tend to stick to the melody and that’s about it.
26. Fried up tone – this is when a singer attempts to use those really low, sexy tones used by Brittney spears. When it’s over-done or not used correctly it can sound a MESS.
27. A SCREAMING belter. Belting is defined by me as “screaming on pitch” but when a singer is just SCREAMING, that’s a different story.
28. Forgetting the lyrics. Don’t do it. Never. Ever. Just don’t.
29. Not singing clearly, poor enunciation skills or the singer’s voice appears to be dragging, otherwise called LAZY SINGING.
30. Not hiring a great and experienced singing coach, LIKE ME to get you the results you need is the worse singing mistake Everrr! LOL.
I’ve seen it all. More examples of “bad singing habits” will be posted soon. If you know of anymore examples that I have left off please contact me and I’ll consider adding it to my list. If you know of anyone who can identify with any of the descriptions I’ve presented on this list put them in touch with me for a FREE session. We’ll get right down to business and have um singing beautifully in record time!
