Lt Barclay (Dwight Schultz) was introduced in the Star Trek the Next Generation episode "Hollow Persuits" that aired first on April 28, 1990. He would play the character 5 times on Star Trek TNG, 6 times on Star Trek Voyager, and once in the feature film Star Trek First Contact. ("Hollow Persuits" Star Trek the Next Generation, TV Event)

Kopikon Presenters: Sally Caves

Kopikon is less than three months away, so let's meet the speakers! I'll present them in the order they'll be presenting on September 23rd at Georgetown University. First up: Sally Caves (a.k.a. Sarah Higley).

Sally's been conlanging since she was a little girl, and she's worked on the same language the entire time: Teonaht. She was one of the original members of the Conlang-L, and helped to create the very first conlang relay with Irina Rempt. She's a professor of English at the University of Rochester where she wrote a book on the Linguae Ignotae of Hildegard von Bingen, the first language creator.

Fans of Star Trek may also not know that it was she who created the character Reginald Barclay in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation she wrote "Hollow Pursuits".

Pretty please with a space cherry on top explain the Alien Sex class you took

HAA oh yes. It was a 200- or 300-level English class cross-listed with gender studies and film, and was an exploration of the representations in television, movies, and literature of “alien” forms of sexuality, and the takeaway was that nobody has any originality and they were, spoiler alert, just mostly using rhetorical framing to talk about fears and concerns about human sexuality.

However this was a good uh, 15 years ago now maybe, so I might be forgetting something. It was taught by a former writer for Star Trek TNG though, so she knew of what she spoke; a phenomenal professor, she specialized in speculative fiction, with a focus on medieval forms thereof, because honestly there is nothing new under the sun.
