His hands shone with ink, brighter than the colour in his hair, his skin, but all the gold in the world couldn't hide their shake. I don't understand, he admits, like the words were a pain he couldn't comprehend. There was a pinch between his eyes, a frown on his lips, and your heart ached for this broken child.

(They are tears, you tell him, as gentle as the waves lapping against his ruined home. They come from sadness, from grief.)

There are many things he doesn't know, you find, but his lips give life to your shared fears. The words fall like stones, stuttered and tumbling over themselves to be heard. There is nothing you can do for him but swallow your failures and listen.
