What kind of set up do you have for Lasso the corn snake? I have seen a few pics here and there but not a in depth one. Looking into different set ups for my corn snakes. I have seen the husbandry tanks you put together, but looking for more of what its like inside.
So, I took a bunch of pictures for you, so you can see for yourself.
Lasso lives in a 4ft x 2ft x 5ft high Animal Plastics custom enclosure. Originally it was ordered for Slinky the rat snake, but he outgrew it, so we upgraded Lasso from her Exo Terra High Glass Terrarium, 36 by 18 by 36-Inch (which she inherited from Rocky when he got his large 8-footer cage… there’s a pattern there, good thing she has no idea, or she’d think we didn’t like her or something.)
Anyways, the “custom” part of this enclosure are the small set of doors on the bottom. Knowing Slinky (when he was young at least) we thought it would be safer to only open the small doors, so he wouldn’t just bolt. And he can be fast, let me tell ya. He mellowed out quite a bit, so now he has a cage with just two large doors.
Her downstairs neighbors are Coil, Makeba, and Leeloo (top to bottom). Each cage has its own thermostat attached to its back, so each snake can have the temperature that’s best for them.
Here’s a panoramic picture of her ground level. I keep it cluttered for her, and I have found that paper products, like tissue boxes, and paper towel and TP rolls do great as enrichment, and if they get pooped on, no big loss. That “mayan” pyramid hide she got from Porthos when he grew out of it. Please don’t tell her!
The thing on the left is a corner litter box (sold for rabbits), which I filled with aspen for her to dig in. It’s her favorite hiding spot. Except when I was taking the picture, and she was elsewhere.
I put some hides in there for her, even though they’re too small for her now, but she likes hiding partially under them as she burrows; and then it’s all covered with a piece of astroturf for privacy. She’s all about privacy. If she had any money, she’d donate it to the EFF, I’m sure.
The backing is a fake stone veneer (made of urethane foam, can be bought online or at home improvement stores; while it’s not cheap, it’s quicker than if I made a whole custom backdrop, and much, much less messy).
This material was chosen to allow Slinky (who this was originally designed for) to climb on. Lasso also uses it for climbing, and since she’s a much smaller snake than Slinky, the ledges are outright easy for her to climb on.
Then there’s the branch, leading up to a magnetic cave. I carved out holes in the background and glued the magnets in, so I can take the cave down if it needs cleaning.
Both the branch and the fake rock hide came from her glass ExoTerra enclosure (and they were in there with Rocky, I had to finally take the cave away from him when he got so heavy that the cave fell off the glass).
Needless to say, everything that was passed between snakes was disinfected and cleaned before being given to another.
So yeah, here you go, a tour of Lasso’s cage. Quite possibly the most spoiled corn snake in the country.
