A couple of weeks ago, I was watching TV when an ad for these Salon Express nail designs came on. Normally, I'm not one for television shopping but I thought it seemed pretty cool so I did a little research online.
There are a number of reviews for a few different types of nail stamping systems but for the most part, they all seemed like they worked pretty well so I went ahead and bought it.
I'll attach a picture of the complete kit, but it comes with 6 design plates, a double-sided stamper, the plate holder thing, the scraper and a nail care kit including a cute tri-fold pouch, scissors, nail clippers and everything else you see in the picture.
As for the nail care kit, it was so cheaply made that when I used the file the gritty part actually came off, the clippers don’t clip and the scissors don’t cut... but whatever, I wasn't overly interested in that stuff anyways, I wanted the stamper.
At first it was a mess, as you can see from the plate holder thing in the picture, I used the thickest nail polish I have (Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in "Grass Slipper") but the scraper is a nightmare. The sound of metal on metal was maddening and it almost never scrapped the plate clean. Which meant picking up the extra polish with the design. I eventually resorted to using an old air miles card lol, which works fantastically, btw.
Anyways, the stamper had a hard time picking up the design but roughing it up with a nail file fixes that issue, and once I had figured all those bugs out. It worked pretty well. Well enough that I went and bought more design plates on Amazon.
So after all of that, here's everything I've learned:
- Trying to stamp onto bare nails does not turn out that well.
- The thicker the polish, the better
- Use an old card instead of the scraper
- Always use a top coat afterward
- Make sure you have nail polish remover for cleanups.
So all in all, I would recommend it as a buy, since it was only about $10 and even though all the extra bits are cheaply made, the design plates and stamper work well and the shipping was pretty quick. I'd received it about a week after I'd purchased it.
