Shipping: People in certain rp circles need to learn that incest was not the norm in all pantheons and just writing a deity is not a guarantee that shipping them with family members is the standard of their people. This is not my nitpicking about shipping characters related by blood-oath, this is ‘I should not find out people ship my muse with her father and act like their divinity would make it normal.’ No it fucking doesn’t, not all polytheistic gods practiced incest. You find it a lot among the Greeks and the Kemetic, but it’s not anywhere near as prevalent in other cycles. Fuck. Just say you’re either a sick fuck who wants to ship relatives or an ignorant newcomer who doesn’t know any better and don’t try to justify it. Jesus. I see so much non-canonical parental and sibling incest in certain myth tags I feel like the last vestige of morals in them.

Fandoms: Can we all stop trying to get people to align with a single set of headcanons? It’s one thing if a piece of fanon is widely accepted and chosen by the fans, it’s another thing entirely when something is taken as canon to the point any alternatives can’t be heard or are shut down entirely. There’s a very popular fandom here on tumblr that has incredibly stringent standards on how my favorite characters look, act, and effectively are -- and I fucking hate it. It’s a book based fandom, people are going to have personal interpretations, and encouraging nothing but the same four white boys over and over again in the same plots with no room to grow or encourage creativity has probably run off a lot of good people and more original ideas. Just. I’m so sick of fandoms trying to make a single hivemind about things and acting like it’s a good thing.

Tumblr: If a person is really, honestly a threat in a way that can hurt people online, I can actually get behind call out posts kind of? Maybe not in the way they are typically structured, and if you have verifiable receipts that someone is, say, a pedophile... then send it to the damn cops, I know you might be worried for minors on the site but when it’s something you should send to law enforcement please at least try a real life avenue. However, if you know or come across something that isn’t as easily prosecuted, such as racism or transphobia, and also have proof, maybe do spread that around to help others stay clear of someone who could harass or in some way hurt others. Just don’t use these posts for petty shit or keep posting them at the drop of a hat.

This didn’t used to be unpopular. I really thought this site as a whole except for some outliers were hip to the way of things. But no, we’re back to square one like when I first started here many years ago. It should not be controversial for me to say that being a victim in the past does not excuse a villain. Your character can come from bad circumstances and still be a bad person of their own volition, and still need to be called out on their actions. There’s nothing wrong with humanizing your villains, or outlining the effect that their upbringing had on them... but I’m seeing too many white boy villains whose acts of evil or wanton dickery is swept under the rug because they are white boys that the userbase and their fans can’t stand to acknowledge as a bad person with no excuse to be a bad person.

The overarching interconnected plot of the MCU didn’t really end up that great and the standalone movies have become the new gold standard for me. I’m more interested in personal stories than the constant character shilling in crossover films. I don’t dislike the characters so much as how they’re written in these events.

Ragnarok is still a bad movie as part of a franchise and I don’t think I’ll ever like it. The more time that passes I’m less demonstrably earth shatteringly fuck all mad and more exhausted that this is the direction that everything has taken. I hate it. I’m just too tired of the same old shit that’s apparently going to be the new standard based on phase whatever news to get mad about it anymore.

Look I’m not saying that every death-deity has to be a Gaimanesque perky goth with an umbrella and a cheerful disposition. I’m just saying there is so much more your death-related character can be besides doom and gloom, or revenge-driven, or unrepentant and villainous at worst and melancholy at best.

I’ve said this before and it probably shows in how I write my own Hel, but I am rather tired of the mold a lot of death gods and goddesses are shafted into. Their is a specific model for them, and I’m sick to death of it in canon. It’s one of those things I wish fandoms would do more to branch out from.

Like, I can think of deities off the top of my head that are so much more than their primary domain. You know as well as I do that Aides was perhaps the most honorable of his pantheon, and oversaw great riches. Both of these seem so at odds with the deplorable, gloomy go-to antagonist so often seen in media portrayals. Arawn in Celtic cycles oversees death, true, but is also a peerless hunter, an ally of heroes, and his realm is a paradise rather than what Christianized media might say on the subject. Hel herself can be read as a fair if solemn creature in certain Norse apocrypha, far from the vengeful and hate-driven maelstrom I see so often.

I just. Want more depth to the rulers of afterlives than what is typically presented. I would say this is unpopular but it happens so often and I see so many fans that eat it up in whole -- making these flawed portrayals out to be strong characterization or somehow ‘cooler’ than what is actually going on. This has happened more with male characters, but I see a lot of it regarding my own muse and her forthcoming MCU debut.

🔥 - anything Sandman related

I was going to make this spoiler free but the salt started flowing so PLEASE do not read past this point unless you want SANDMAN SPOILERS.

Thessaly, Thessaly, Thessaly... I get her point in the story. I get she had a role to play as literally everyone else in this story did. I understand she is integral and not to be discounted.

Except I do. I really, really do.

To me, she came in a touch too late in the game for the impact she had. So much of what we know of her and how she became the figure we see in The Kindly Ones and afterwards is only relayed to us by other characters. To me, we needed to see more of her as herself rather than from third parties before I could be asked to give a damn.

This series has a lot of great female characters, the kind any writer should aspire too -- but I don’t see Thessaly as one. We see motivations for so many others, especially other antagonists* like Lyta or Desire, but Thessaly just seems to amount to.... Woman Scorned. Or she wants to settle a debt. 

Which on their own could be fascinating motivations. The idea that one of Morpheus’ old flames actually lashes out in more extreme ways than Nada did is a fascinating one, and could have been played well. Even the idea of a woman protecting the Furies from Morpheus to erase their hatred of her is very interesting and could really help make her a more ambivalent character in the course of the penultimate story arc -- is this truly done out of malice and lack of love, or simply a desperate move for survival against forces that are beyond even a witch of Thessaly’s age and ability? I can see so many ways this could be done that contribute to an understandable and interesting character.

But that is not how Thessaly was written, I’m afraid.

Honestly, she comes off as a dumpster fire of all of my favorite non-heroic female tropes in my favorite series. She seems more like a plot point than a character in her own right. Everything she does drives plot without real personal viscera as I read it. There needed to be more to her, more than 'Hi I'm here in Barbie's plot,' and then disappear for 4 volumes only to pop back in at the eleventh hour like 'surprise I was Morpheus' lover and the one to save Lyta all along!!!!’ There are side characters in single arcs that have more development than her, in my opinion.

I hope her two solo series help to flesh her out the way I never saw in the main series. That’s the only way I can fathom her having two separate series at all when many of my favs are left to the wayside after the curtain fall on canon.** I’m also counting those two solo series as making her popular enough to make my dislike at worst and apathy at best towards her an unpopular opinion.

*Not properly villains, IMO, but enough of a hindrance to our protagonist that they do qualify as antagonists.**Nuala is out there traveling the realms. Destruction is out there traveling the Goddamn multiverse. Why are we focusing in Morpheus’ ex with a grudge?

I don’t care about what kind of html marvel someone’s 150x150 container theme with 5px dark grey glowing text and a jet black background is, if your theme is not accessible to your followers with vision problems, I think it’s ugly. I’m also not fond of links that are not easy to find. Generally, a theme that is there for aesthetics over accessibility pisses me right the fuck off.

Like you can have a cool theme and make it as neat as you want but it also has to be maneuverable if you want your followers to find anything. Especially people who cannot see very well. It’s 2017 and I have been done with this trend since it first crawled up from the bowels of Hell in late 2015, or at least that was when I first started to see it.

It’s even worse when these people pair this nightmarescape of a webpage with REALLY FUCKIN TINY ICONS.

Adam Carter wasn’t all that great of a lead character. I really liked those who came before and after him. I feel like Danny really should have stuck around as our lead, but I understand there were some kind of conflicts behind the scenes that led to the actor’s departure.

Adam gets really boring to me, I guess because of how long he hung around. I don’t think the series really is any good between Danny leaving the show and rs showing up. Ros really does bring the whole team and its chemistry together better than Adam imo. When Adam is good he’s great but I just. He bores me to fuckin tears SatanFish.

Muns of male characters who automatically assume all female muses do is want to ship and collect romantic partners are way worse than muns of female muses who are just in it for shipping. Muns who act like their male muse’s dick is so good that obviously all those ‘shitty female characters’ just want to hop on it are arrogant and gross and I want them all to shut up and stay far far away from me and all of my muses :’)

A lot of stereotypes about female characters would probably die if male character muns pulled their heads out of their asses, because I feel like they’re the only ones perpetuating that shit in this day and age.

S*ndman show fandom, separate from the RPC but still getting into askboxes, is kind of wilding, but that’s about my only complaint so far. Admittedly, I have not yet dipped my toes into several fandoms, but the ones I am familiar with have stayed pretty cool and normal. There’s uh. There’s some fuckery afoot in one anime rpc I’m working towards joining, but it seems to be an isolated incident that people are responding to with both tact and thought as compared to the original post. that’s kind of cool, instigating incident aside.
