For our first post in #SaltWeek we have someone being perhaps a little too creative with #SuperMarioMaker. This level has the player guide Mario to McDonalds to eat a burger that will make him too big - fat - to finish the level. The player must then take Mario to the gym where they must run on treadmills until spikes descend, hurting Mario and changing his size to allow him to finish the level. ... Where do I even start. The casual #fatphobia is pretty gross. You're fat, therefore you're unable to achieve the outcome - completing the level. That's a completely unnecessary message. There's also a lot of prejudice about the eating habits of plus size people to unpack here. Blech. It's all very "go on fatty have another cheeseburger". Then there is the method of getting thinner. The treadmill on its own I suppose is ok. I understand that Mario getting smaller by taking damage is a game mechanic. The problem is when the size is equated to fatness and not just bigness. You're hurting yourself to lose weight in this frame. I mean, most women I know have done this to some degree but this isn't something to be mocked, to be used as a comedic device. This is harmful. It's 2019. Let plus size people live. We don't need to hurt ourselves to achieve a goal. We are capable. Thin isn't the precursor to success. We need, we MUST do better with the messages we send about the worthiness of a person depending on their size. #gaming #instagaming #discourse #plussizegamer #gamergirl #girlwhogames #bodypositivity https://www.instagram.com/p/B0judNjHjwf/?igshid=1vwq2s967nu8e
