it was stupid. 

rarely does joseph level such an insult at anyone, let alone his brother. but john’s dogged pursuit of the deputy borders on suicidal, and all can see it. joseph had warned him firmly of straying from the path. joseph had lectured him on forgiveness, on temperance. it seems now he’ll have to teach him of caution, too.

           “do not toy so idly with your life, john,” he replies sternly. “there is still work to be done. your brothers and sisters must carry the burden of your absence.”

Everything had gone as expected when he'd faked his death, impeccable aim ensured the bullet went through without causing any permanent harm but it sure looked like he'd died when he'd dropped to the floor like a lead weight, even his sniper wasn't to know he had a plan all along.

But there was only so long he could sit back and wait, merely watching as Sherlock did what he could to tear the web apart. He was methodical, that much was true but just as it was dismantled it was being rebuilt elsewhere. No ties to his previous businesses, no leads for any Holmes to follow in order to track him down. They didn't need to know he was alive, not yet, he had plans to make a show of it when the time came.

Though there was one individual he felt he was missing, a certain pet of his that he enjoyed having by his side and while he could happily leave him to be snapped up by the Holmes, JIm felt it'd be far better to have Moran for himself. -- It took only a call to find out where he was and only a short drive to get there, not a single care paid to how the sniper might feel about his sudden return. With a firm knock on the door, he waited expectantly, arms folded across his chest in an impatient manner.
