Clary Sage is native to the Mediterranean basin, and it seems most people selling Clary Sage essential oils point specifically to Italy, Southern France, and Syria as its origins. I love the smell of these floral and funky flowers, though some find it too much like body odor. It is used in many body products and in aroma therapy to help ease stress. It’s name (also called Clear Eye) comes from its early uses both as an eye-wash tea and to place a seed in an eye to remove a foreign object - when the seeds get wet, they form a sticky mucilage. This plant has also been used historically to help with painful menstruation and menopause. These here flowers are young. This is a biennial that stays short and bushy the first year, and flowers dramatically in the second.
