                              “ YOU THINK I DIDN’T TRY TO STOP HIM ?”

angered tone further enunciated by the SLAM of a fist to the wood table - it snaps . fist trembles at where it lands, a tremor that overtakes his body in WAVES--- jack regards mccree with a RAGE in his countenance, & for a genuine moment he HATES the man standing before him---

opposite elbow meets remaining portion of splintered table, a finger outstretched in jesse’s direction ,  still matching the quiver of the other ; but jack only seethes inwardly , pursing his lips & looking aside, hand falling with a half-hearted smack.

leaning back , the soldier drags a hand across his face , & the inhale that follows is wet , SHUDDERING---

                                       “ i’ve known him since before you were BORN, mccree. ”

a fact most seem to FORGET - jack & gabriel fought side-by-side for YEARS ; reyes was not only jack’s PARTNER in combat , he was in all ways except literally an EXTENSION of him---the two had relied on each other during their years in the SEP , the omnic crisis , the fucking grand RISE & FALL of OVERWATCH---

& somewhere along the way , gabriel had SHUT him OUT--- to him , jack had become an ENEMY , & there was nothing the latter could do to MEND the BREAK except HOLD ON to what he’d HAD LEFT------

it BREAKS his HEART , a weight that clenches VICE-LIKE & drags LOW - it CHOKES HIM , body often wracked with WRETCHING in response to the heavy SOBS he hides behind closed doors ; it keeps him up at night , dreams turned tumultuous by the fucking MEMORIES , & the constant reminders that HE HADN’T DONE ENOUGH . it KILLS him , the soldier running himself RAGGED in the hunt for REAPER , in his goal of bringing the man HOME---

                                                                   gabriel fucking HAUNTS him .

a shake of his head , & jack rises swiftly to his feet , kicking over his chair in a fit of frustration normally better kept SEALED--- at his sides fists CLENCH , one dripping BLOOD at where flecks of wood have embedded themselves - he’s too upset to notice .

it’s with VITRIOL in tone that he concludes , inflection heavy with THREAT :

          “ don’t FUCKING speak to me about gabriel reyes. ”

“I’m fine.” The words that are thrown out are QUICK and SHARP, an defensive, automatic response that left him before his brain had fully caught up. He WASN’T fine, that much was obvious if Mccree had taken notice. Reyes normally is a rather reserved man, not revealing much and withholding so much more than he allows others to see. SOME people were privy to a bit more than others, Jesse is one of those few. You don’t entrust someone with your life on a daily basis and spend such a large amount of time with them for a bond of trust and respect NOT to form...

Reyes, however, was beginning to DISCOVER just what it was like when bonds like that begin to break down...

Maybe he is just tired, Moria’s experiments, while in the early stages, still were taking their TOLL upon him. For a few moments, the gentle, reassuring, hand upon his shoulder isn’t even registered until he sees with his own eyes the gloved hand GLIDING over tense muscles. The words spoken hit surprisingly hard but still, he swallows past the lump in his throat that results, shoving those squirming emotions down. He needs to get a grip on himself and FOCUS. There was too much that needed his attention, he couldn’t afford to start drifting off now.

“No seriously, it’s nothin’ you need to concern yourself with.” the hand upon his shoulder is shrugged off and he attempts to flash Mccree with a rather TIGHT sort of smile. “Don’t worry about it you hear? I’ll be fine”

SILENCE WHISPERS IN THE AIR BETWEEN THEM, as frigid as the Northern winds that swept in from the mountains. It disturbs her not, nor does the threat upon her life. She regards him with poise, molten amber orbs drinking in the cowboys visage with just the vaguest of tilts. Few are a better shot than she, but  Amélie has no doubt Jesse McCree could be the one to kill her in one blow should he be fast enough to pull the trigger. The assassin of course recognizes that she should feel fear, should perhaps understand the consequences of the situation occurring between them but... She cannot, and therefore she doesn’t. 

It’s one glance, just one, from him to her left with that revolver and then down the scope that she makes the judgment call. And it’s a surprising one. 

                “ Alright. ”

Perhaps he would find out later - her target had already vacated the scene, long since fled through underground corridors to more likely meet his end at the barrels of her partner’s hellfire shotguns. But for now, Widowmaker acquiesced, the Widow’s Kiss folding to her side - and smooth as silk, she drops before him, every inch of her lethal and predatory and beautiful. 

                 “ What is in it for me, vacher? ”

I have a lot of feelings about Widow and Gerard. I firmly believe their marriage was a happy one, and that she loved him very, very, very much. It was healthy and it was good and it was almost picture perfect until Talon set their sights on poor Widow. It’s pretty much the ultimate tragic story. I could gush for days about how deeply Widow loved Gerard and how if she wasn’t unable to feel complex human emotion, she’d just be broken over having killed him. The fact that Widow visit(s) Gerard’s grave really hits home with me, as well as how she calls out his name when Mercy resurrects her. Like... Christ. Even through all her brainwashing and biological altering it’s clear that Gerard and his memory is something that tugs on what remains of Widow’s humanity. 

THEY WERE HAPPY AND NOW THEY’RE NOT AND I’M SAD.

To sum it up... just... yes, all around. I will never discount Widow and Gerard for my Widowmaker because their marriage and love is so so so so good and important to both their characters. 10/10 all around. Aside from that part where Gerard is like... (probably most likely 100%) dead in canon.
