(re: sam as slytherin post) sam personifies slytherin to me because between him and dean he's usually the scapegoat; people overlook the good in him to focus on the bad; and his decisions are always under question because he's constantly under question. meanwhile, dean personifies gryffindor to me because people see him as incapable of doing wrong even when he's doing wrong; between him and sam he's usually the model child; and he has a tendency toward riding the high horse.
just curious… what house do you think he’s in? Everyone always puts him in Ravenclaw, presumably because he’s intelligent/nerdy, but when people profile that simply it bothers me cos there’s so much more to the hogwarts houses than that…(cont.) I’ve never sat down and thought about it carefully though, so I don’t know what house I’d put him in….
This is one of my favorite things to do with all my favorite shows! You know I have truly grown to love something when I start sorting characters into Houses. I KINDA touched on this a while back here.
Firstly, I've always felt how to sort people is rooted in a person's personal motivations rather than actions, a lot more to do with why they do the thing rather than the thing itself. So that's how I consider Houses when I start sorting people.
I think the boys honestly are BOTH Gryffindors who lean towards other houses only slightly. Both of them are unbelievably brave and value doing the right thing. They have to be daring and have nerve to do what they do every single day. I just don't think either of them break enough into other Houses NOT to be considered Gryffindors.
However, I think Sam straddles the line of Gryff and Ravenclaw more than Dean may straddle any lines. Sam values learning and growing his knowledge by reading and becoming educated. He uses this part of himself in hunting almost as much as his Gryffindor traits.
Dean has to be about 98% Gryff, but if he straddles any line at all, it'll be Slytherin in my opinion because of that bit in the song where it says "use any means/To achieve their ends." And that's solely based on Dean's pattern of choosing saving Sam over saving anyone else ever in the world for Dean's own sake. Dean would do anything it takes in that situation to achieve his own end. But honestly, that's the only bit of Slytherin I can see. He's a Gryffindor, fo sho.
I think the post I read once about Sam being classified as Slytherin was based on the fact that he made choices that were selfish and I thought that was so SO shitty because it paints both Slytherin and Sam in a bad light. Because A) Sam doesn't make selfish decisions constantly, so that made me mad, and B) being a Slytherin doesn't necessarily mean being selfish (though Slytherins are the House most predisposed to it).
I think the HP books have examples of good an bad Slytherins (as they do of all the Houses), but what Sam does doesn't even fall under "good Slytherins." Slytherins are ambitious and opportunistic, and you won't see a lot of Slytherin's willing to jump in the Cage with the Devil himself to save a bunch of people he/she doesn't even know. It would be quite uncharacteristic.
That's not to say I don't think Sam and Dean have characteristics of all 4 Houses, because I think most all of us do. But if I'm honest, the Winchesters are Gryffindors, through and through. The percentage of other House either of them possess isn't enough, IMO, to even debate which weighs more.
