So firstly this blog is amazing! I gave up watching Supernatural regularly since like the end of season 8 so it's impressive to see you so dedicated to this amazing character and this highly flawed series. I've loved Sam since the beginning of the show: from season 1 where he was the (arguably justifiably) resentful little sibling who just wanted a safe life, to when his powers started appearing, I've loved his character and Jared's performance from day one. Plus he went through one of my favourite tropes: a good-intentioned character with a dark side (especially involving powers) travels down a dangerous road and eventually beats both internal and external dangers. Seasons 4 and 5 were some of my favourite seasons of tv and I was so disappointed when Sam started to just be beaten down for no reason, eventually being relegated to a support character in both a functional and emotional way. Hearing especially about the way Lucifer comes back every single time less threatening and breaking continuity (how did he posses Castiel??) makes me miserable. And the apparent de-evolution of the brothers and the repetition of Dean’s “man-pain” (which was getting old to me in season 6-7) makes your dedication even more impressive. You are truly awesome and kind! If anything, desperate optimism and relative fandom-newness deserve a lot of credit for keeping me going until now. Many people have been in the fandom for ages, but I only watched SPN in 2013/2014, posted a fic for it in 2015, and joined Tumblr fandom in mid-2015, so I’m kind of a fandom infant. My blog will have its third birthday just a few days before Sam’s birthday! Because I’m newish to the fandom and relatively sheltered in my tiny little Sam-love corner, I haven’t seen the all-out fandom wars some of the more dedicated viewers have endured.

I’m glad to hear you’ve loved Sam from the beginning! I’m the same. From the moment I watched “Bloody Mary,” I fell hard for him and his story and knew he’d be my favorite until death (or bad writing) do us part.

Also yessssss, powers!Sam is amazing. I think my favorite seasons were probably 1 and 2, because I love the whole uncertain and exploratory aspect of his powers there. (Also I am evil and mmmm give me vision!migraine Sam every day of the week and twice on every day Sundays.)

I think there are reasons for Sam being beaten down in canon, but I won’t go into them because then I would spiral into bitterness and no one would have fun. In short, his attempts to assert himself have almost without exception been met with anger, disagreement, and damaging (but often unrelated) consequences. Sam is likely beaten down because he doesn’t trust his own conclusions and perceptions when it comes to himself, and has been led to believe that most of his major choices for himself were Wrong™ and Selfish™.

The plot holes and retcons and WTF-ery that only Bucklemming can create haven’t helped matters, I suppose.

The thing about Lucifer, I guess, is that the whole plotline could have been so interesting and unsettling and lovely and dark and fun to explore in all sorts of terrifying and creepy and gray-area ways that developed Sam and explored Lucifer and his beliefs about humanity and the world, but instead we got… well. We got seasons 11-13.
