When Sam Gillespie said, "I don't go to church for the same reason I'm not married/don't have a wife," He had to mean I don't know if I believe in God and I don't know if I am straight. What other interpretation is there? He's struggling with his faith and sexuality. He can't go to church until he resolve that struggle or he'll feel like a liar/fraud. He can't be good husband until he can be fully committed to a woman without wondering what life with a man would be like. He needs to accept he's agnostic and bisexual. He needs his reputation as a lady's man to justify why a young looking professional man age 35-40 in 1960s Britain is a bachelor. He didn't even let himself mourn his relationship with Ruth, because he can't stop playing the role for too long. Every scene where they talk about Sam chasing women just feel so forced and disingenuous. Only his scenes with Ruth or Jane feel like genuine attraction and not a him putting on a show for an audience.

Felix choosing Great Slaughter over a life with Victoria is also a metaphor for his sexuality. He and Victoria were getting married because and I quote, "It is the right thing to do," that phrasing threw me for a loop. They weren't in love, they just loved each other and believe as two Christians young people heterosexual marriage and kids is their duty. With them getting together as teenagers and being Catholic (and very religious) and from 1960s Caribbean adjacent, I don't think they've had sex with each other or anyone else for matter. Felix was following a script for his life, and when he came to England and saw a culture with more leeway for unconventional living, he fell in love. And it is telling that when Felix does meet a suitable woman in Great Slaughter, he still feels it isn't right. His heart just isn't in it. He can use the excuse he's still recovering from heartbreak, but it will only last so long. He is gay. And this is talking out my ass, but I believe he partly feels satisfied with his life in Great Slaughter because he has an arrangement where he can live with a man (roommates) and share his life with him (they're partners) without suspicion. He stumbled in the arrangement best for him and he couldn't give that up.

There is no bigger Sam x Ruth shipper than Sister Boniface herself, lmao. I mean the implication of her imagining a Sound of Music style scene between the two of them is just hilarious. Like, she wants them to be together that bad that she's creating fanfic about it in her head

When Mrs Clam is telling Felix on the night before his wedding that with true love you just know, and the rest is to be forgotten, and he still chooses Great Slaughter (Sam) over every other possible future he could have had

Actually, this pair of glasses looks like this. What it represents is "a kitten in tears". I mean it really looks like a kitten in tears- when I saw it on social media, the image of Alex wearing them popped into my head right away😋🤤
