Can we take a moment and appreciate how cute these two are?

Yeah, a happy sex scene! 

I believe it’s a big deal that Gilly kisses Sam and initiates the sex since she’s been raped by her father her whole life and has never known romantic love or compassion from any male figure until Sam. The fact that she initiates the sex is important for her character. And yet despite all of the sexual pain she’s been through her main concern is Sam and her baby’s wellbeing. Sure having sex with Sam while he’s recovering from getting his ass kicked isn’t the smartest of ideas, but I think seeing him getting beat up made Gilly realize just how much she cared for him. So during the sex scene she was all gentle and asking permission which is so sweet, usually you don’t see that in sex scenes, especially not on Game of Thrones. It’s one of the few times two characters can be seen as actually “making love,” along with Robb and Talisa, and Jon and Ygritte. 

It’s like this: even in this dark and dangerous time after nearly dying so many times, Sam and Gilly (and other characters) still have the ability to love one another and be kind in a cruel world. It’s beautiful. 

It’s nice for the show to take time out from its usual scenes of plotting, scheming, and danger to give us a legitimately sweet, quiet moment.
