❝You know, most people try to be, I don't know — pleasant company.❞ But there was no real bite to it. Sam shook his head, rolling his eyes for good measure. He tilted his head, watching Bucky like he was trying to crack a particularly stubborn puzzle piece. ❝Lemme tell you something — if you ever stop being a pain in the ass, I’m gonna have to start worrying. Check your temperature or I dunno, check to see if you’re a Skrull or something.❞

Sam shook his head, pulling up a chair in front of Ross' cell, a familiar routine at this point. ❝Gee, thanks, old man.❞ He teased, but the corner of his mouth turned up into a hint of a smile. ❝I'm all good.❞ He insisted, but it was clear that he was worn down. Maybe the shield was wearing him down a little. Maybe it was all the side projects he was always taking on. Either way, he was feeling exhausted.

Sam feigned being shocked, but there was a glimmer of pride in his eyes, hidden behind his goggles. He wouldn't exactly say it (they'd built up too much banter at this point), but Bucky's opinion did matter to him. ❝Impressed? Damn, I didn’t think I’d live to hear you say that. It almost sounded like a compliment. What’s next? A thank you? Maybe even a hug?❞ He teased, grinning brightly.

❝Did you like the landing? That was my favorite part.❞ He chuckled softly, passing Bucky with gentle nudge to his shoulder.

Sam snorted, not even bothering to hide his grin as he shot Bucky a sideways look.❝Oh, come on. It's because I’m the only one who's not scared to tell you when you’re being an asshole.❞ He bumped Bucky’s shoulder with his own, an easy and familiar gesture. Sam’s smile softened just a little, voice dropping to something more serious. ❝And when things get ugly, you know I’m not going anywhere.❞

Sam’s grin turned sharp again. ❝And because you pretend to be annoyed at me, but you still keep answering my texts and calls. That’s friendship, man. You don’t get out of it that easily and you’re welcome, by the way.❞

Sam's grin was immediate, wide, bright and just on the side of smug. He was enjoying himself way too much. Their banter just never got old.

❝Oh, absolutely not.❞ He let out a laugh, deep in his chest. ❝I’m not gonna let that go. Nah, man.❞ There was no animosity in it. Only fondness that came from too many near-death experiences and not enough normal moments. ❝You were all like, ‘I got this, Sam.’❞ He said, mimicking Bucky’s gruff tone. ❝And then two seconds later you’re hanging off the side of the truck. Man, I wish Redwing had caught that on his footage. That would be on the highlight reel.❞

He smirked a little. ❝Now, granted, you've redeemed yourself for sure. But no promises that Redwing won't record your next thing.❞

He tilted his head, eyes glinting with amusement. But his tone dropped just a little, into something warmer. ❝It’s good to see you laughing. Even if it’s at your own expense.❞

Sam blinked, eyebrows lifting as he turned his head slowly to look at Bucky, like he was trying to decide if he’d heard him right. ❝You pinkyswore?❞ He repeated, voice somewhere between disbelief and amusement. He leaned back against the couch, one arm slung lazily behind it as he shook his head. ❝You know, I’ve seen you take down six guys with a knife and no backup. This is what finally makes me question everything I thought I knew about you.❞

He glanced over at him again, eyes narrowing like he was trying to read him. ❝Must be real serious. You gonna at least give me a hint? Code word? Anything?❞ A beat. ❝Well, anyway, I'm offering. Just in case you need to talk about it. We can pinkswear too.❞

As Sam swung open the door to the hotel room, his eyes automatically fell on the one bed in the center of the room. He stepped further inside, waiting for Bucky to register the same thing he was. The two of them were going to have to share a bed. He glanced over at Bucky, who stood in the doorway with a duffel slung over his shoulder and that same unreadable expression Sam couldn’t quite pin down. It was always a toss-up with him — either mildly annoyed or on the verge of saying something sarcastic.

❝They said the hotel was full, so I guess we're just gonna have to deal.❞ Sam said, beginning to remove his wing-pack. There was no use in making a big deal out of it. Even if Sam's face was beginning to get a little hot at the implications of stripping down to his underwear to lay in bed next to Bucky. Whatever was going on between them was going to have to be put aside for the night. Whatever tension they had, which had seemed to shift from general annoyance to banter to something else entirely, was just going to have to be ignored.

❝Just don’t hog the blankets or elbow me in your sleep, and we’ll make it through the night alive.❞ Sam glanced up at Bucky with the corner of his mouth twitching into a smile, hoping to break any awkwardness with a little humor.

Sam has a loud personality, but not in an obnoxious or overbearing way. It’s more like confident warmth. He walks into a room and people notice, not because he demands attention, but because his presence is charismatic and genuine. He's naturally engaging, quick with a joke or a sharp comment, and can read the room.

That said, he’s not always seeking the spotlight. Sam can absolutely hold his own at the center of attention. But he’s also just as comfortable sitting back, listening, letting others speak, and stepping in only when it matters. He’s got that rare blend of leadership with emotional intelligence. He's someone who knows when to speak and when to let others shine.
