sam doesn’t have too many friends, his social skills are… selective, to say the least. he doesn’t need lots of friends, though. just one good one. one good one who’d been so nice as to invite him to a friend-of-a-friend-of-the-guy-she-was-seeing’s-birthday party. “i’m sam, it’s nice to meet you,” he greets with a forced smile as his friend introduced him to them before immediately darting off to go talk to someone else, leaving him stood there completely stumped. “ —uh… hi, i guess?”

“i look stupid.” it was about the only thing that sam had said for the better part of an hour now, fingers awkwardly rising to fix his hair before he hesitated. didn’t want to ruin their ‘hard work’. “why couldn’t we just have dressed up as something that required a mask? i least i wouldn’t have to face the humiliation of everyone seeing me.”

someone in the universe must have it out for sam. that’s the only explanation he can come up with for stepping into the bar and seeing an all too familiar face sitting in the booth his date for the evening told him they’d be in. still, with a stiff back he heads straight for them and slides into the other side. “fancy seeing you here.”

“so, were the harringtons everything you ever dreamed of?” sam sounds… flat as he makes his way into the hotel room, settling down on the edge of the bed and leaning his weight back against his hands. the smile he offers doesn't quite meet his eyes. he is uncomfortable.
