WRG!Sabbatical:

Life on the other side of the screen has kick itsekf up a couple of 1000 notches, so, we're taking a leave of absence for a couple of weeks, (6 to be precise).  You can still look forward to a couple of the best pieces from our favorite bloggers (don't you just love the reblog button) and acouple more reviews, every Friday from our resident author, Steve J Davies.  We'll also be restructuring and saying goodbye to a few of our other writers and welcoming new ones.

WRG!Sports:  Euro 2012 Highlights

After assessing the best and worst reviewed posts by all our tumblr followers, don't we just love the little percentages here and there, we've come to realise that no one gives two scoops of ice cream about the loong and fabulous detailings of every football match up on the blog.  

What can I say?  I follow your lead people, short summaries and videos is what you want...short summaries and videos is what you'll get.

La Furia Roja, Spain mopped the floor with the Republic of Ireland last week, 4 - 0.  Come on now...free football lessons for Ireland.  

So sorry boys - try again next time.

WRG!Sports:  Ronaldo, Ozil, Khedira...Real Madrid Heavyweights at Euro 2012

                                           Euro 2012 Highlights

The goal-scoring drought is over - for Real Madrid superstar and team captain of the Portuguese team, Cristiano Ronaldo.  Rafael Van De Vaart opened the score board  and all hope could have been lost, but, that hunger for goals...well, that superseded any nose dive in morale and Ronaldo managed to drag his boys in red up out of potential expulsion, with two superb goals. Enjoy more highlights from the game in the video clip.

Russia was kicked out by Greece and that's only a big shocker if you really expected either of those teams to be in the finals anyway.  Wonderful for Greece though after the tumultuous year they've had in football, in their socio-political and economic sphere - getting through is a big deal... a little ray of sunshine.

Germany kicked out Denmark with their immaculate unit doing what they do best, seriously, if you've seen these guys play, it's like watching a kind of group cohesion on the verge of "group think".  It's a different kind of beast, a different type of "Total Football" and how much fun is it to watch? Who fell asleep during their endeavor to mop the floor with Denmark? No one?  Yeah...I thought so. Maybe they're a bit telepathic...  

I'm itching for the finals now. Can we find the fast forward button anyone? Oh and do we think that Euro 2008/World Cup 2010 Champions, Spain will be able to make it a second tenure?  I'm undecided...especially with Khedira and friends breezing through matches like they did  against Denmark.

WRG!Literature: The “Just Killing Time” series

                                            Introducing Steve J Davies

With our first edition of WRG!GoodReads up this week, a review of the book, written by our own is in order.  The “Just Killing Time” series, written by Davies, is a diarised account of the progression of the main protagonist from states of underlying and overlaying violence to emancipated serial killer.

If you've read the True Crime genre, maybe some Patricia Cornwell or most significantly Jesse Kellerman, you will be familiar with the most popular archetypal structure of serial killer lore and with the latter, a first person account as well. 

Davie’s character Carl features none of the characteristics of the serial archetype found in fiction. His is a protagonist who delivers a scathing account of his existence.  From the word go, there is an overtone, an "elephant in the room" type of pre-emption towards  violence.  He is irate, sharp but not witty and delivers his anger bluntly with an equally colorful vocabulary. 

The introduction of violence with, say, the dog, does follow the conventional serial killer story line, except that in this case, Carl is not a child but a fully grown man so the impact of it is both visceral yet expected, after reading further on and gaining further insight into his behavioral "blue-print".  Expectation and suspense are replaced with frank, immediate detailing; one sees Carl for exactly what and who he is.  His is an unstable almost unlikeable character, which is a deviation from the literature of the "struggling" man who finds himself becoming a killer or, even the sauvé, likeable murderer full of stylistic charm and intelligence.

His is a story depicting the essence of a devolutionary sociopath on his downhill journey into the psychopathic role of serial killer, strangely, it is also in contrast, or rather, clashing with the evident evolution from animal murderer right up to full blown serial.

Fans or people interested in the True Crime genre, (such as, say the Cruel Sacrifice by Aphrodite Jones, the biography of Shanda Sharer's murderers) and fiction, as well as the Jesse Kellerman (prolific US author of “The Executor”) fans who have become accustomed to reading about philosophers-turned-murderers or professors-turned-murderers or even doctors-turned-murderers, might find this book a good read as well; to be able to study the opposite of the characterisation of intellectual killer - the instinctual one.

Davies credits the discovery of the journals belonging to Jack "The Ripper" as one of his definitive inspirations behind the Just Killing Time series.  An avid fan of "dark" literature, this week he reviews a fellow Indie author and peer in the 21st century variation of the Thriller/Horror genre.  Davies is also, on the verge of completing the final installment to the series, so stay tuned for more information on where to get your copy.

Real Madrid finds success in Kuwait

It may not be oil, but two goals scored during the friendly were more than enough to keep the euphoria coursing through the recent league winners veins.  Do we need to say once more that the “usual suspects” netted two?  Well, there you have it, Cristiano (CR7) the man who has won more games than any other player in La Liga this season, scored at 31 minutes, that’s four minutes after Angel Di Maria scored the opener (and we were very happy to see the Argentine in the starting line up again).

Adan, Altintop, Varane, Sahin and Granero were given rare starting line ups as well (Granero could almost be touted as a regular in comparison to the rest of the substitutes though). Ronaldo, Özil, Di Maria, Benzema, Coentrão and Carvalho, filled out the rest of the line up.

There is a standing saying out in the football sphere, heck, any sport out there, that there’s no such thing as "friendly" in a friendly match.  Well, in this case, there was..  The Kuwaitis welcomed the team with grace and poise; including meeting with the entire Royal family including His Highness, the Emir. One was forgiven for thinking that a royal delegation had arrived in the Gulf state. 

With Fabio Cannavaro and Diego Maradona already paving the way to a global Middle Eastern contribution to the grand football stage by plying their trade their in the past two years; the excitement of having arguably the biggest team in the world strutting their stuff on their pitch was to be expected.

Everyone loves a winner.

  Innovation is a rare sight to come upon in art.  So often, the inspirations of today have been conceptualised at the feet of the past.  Which is not to say that reinventions are not innovative nor inspirational all on their own. The ability to cast out common, cast in novelty, and mould a unique look from different references is unique, resulting in just that; inimitable creations...the kind that only artists can pull off.

     An “Eastern Alice meets Wonderland” take on fashion through the delicate velvets, hand cut and hand sewn flowers is one such adventure into an era in fashion that is full of possibility.  The era of the “Young Designer”.  There haven't been many in our time, most notable being the incomparable Christian Siriano who would be the first  to attest to pushing boundaries and playing with colour and fabrics. 

  Young designer Zakkiyyah “Zak” Obaray plays double dutch as both the model but, more importantly, as the designer of these dreamy looks.  Hers is a medley of inspiration, in the case of some of the pieces in this shoot, say, the sari,  Manish Malhotra and Elie Saab, would be singled out as pivotal.  These pieces showcase the raw talent of the next generation of designers and gives every fashionista something to look forward to out there in the “big bad” world of commercialisation. 

      Obaray believes in paying heed to a singular focal point, to create the identity of the garment.  In this case, that distinct signature was the combination of fabrics. 

    A sari in midnight velvet with hand made flowers and pearls, whilst paisley prints were the chosen stand out pieces for the lining to create a myriad of colour on the mint green and fuchsia shimmering sari.  With each piece being a separate and part of different collections, the depth of creativity within this new era of young designers is definitely not hindered by steadfast rules of antique creations.

WickedRunway!Focus: Vivien of Holloway...Retro Revivalist

           Get Quirky with it: Tea parties and weddings 

                                Let's have a tea party, a themed one, a retro one.  Jaime King as Lemon Breeland and Rachel Bilson as Zoe Hart of the popular CWTV’s, Hart of Dixie are quite the style icons on television at the moment. (Wait; this only works if you switch on the southern accent inside your mind…ready?…I do so love the accent...and…go!). Two distinctly different styles, two distinctly different eras of reference yet the effect is quite the same – we want to emulate it, with ease. 

                          The true belle of the "Blue-Bell" ball has to be Ms Lemon Breeland who channels the best of the best with sometimes way-out-there dresses, yet they still speak to the quirky side of us.  Vivien of Holloway offers just that; spunky, rockabilly chic and it's all up to you just how far you want to hop on the express train back yonder into time.

Now now, keep in mind a couple of basics:  go big in the skirt, minimal in the top and vice versa, we wouldn't want to have you walking around looking like a tea-cosy now do we, or worse, a really cute fruitcake on the loose.  Think Bradshaw rather than Mary Poppins and we're good to go.  In this case, some neutrals will be your best friend: pastel/ivory/white boleros or cardigans look so southern and most importantly, they tame down the look just a bit.

The choices are easy, go big or fitted in the skirt which is also available as a pinafore. (1950's Cadillac and fiancé are optional.  Flirty fun is mandatory though...so smile) Each dress has a unique name like "Cream Tea Rose" giving each piece an identity, a sort of cue on which to follow: how much bubble needs to be in your pop before you head out looking just fine and dandy with a couple o' scoops of precious in your vintage revival.
