INTERVIEW
Samantha-Jane from Fabryan
Fashion with a heart
How would you describe the Fabryan woman?
The fabryan woman is driven, confident and self-assured. She knows what she wants and does not stop until she gets there. She embodies female strength and is independent.
According to the Fabryan website (www.fabryan.com), you are a self-taught designer. Tell us about your creative journey to become founder and creative force behind Fabryan London.
My mother was a dress maker so I grew up in a creative world. After my degree, I worked within graphic design. I then reached a point in which I wanted to do something for myself and have my own business. This is when I decided to create Fabryan.
Your highly successful first accessories collection was entitled the ‘Psychedelic Collection’. The current, second collection, the ‘Gaudi Collection’ draws inspiration from Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi and perfectly captures the vibrancy and vitality of Barcelona. From where do you draw your inspiration when designing scarves?
I honestly believe inspiration comes from everywhere. It can be art, a person, a building, a song. It's so important to keep your eyes open and continue to learn from your environment.
My personal favourite Fabryan scarf design is the one inspired by the vaults of the nave of the Sagrada Família. Do you have a particular favourite design or one that you are most proud of?
I love them all.
The silk scarf has really come into itself as a modern must-have accessory, much to the delight of scarf addicts like myself! How do you choose to wear your scarf?
I like to tie mine around neck or around my handbag.
Do you have a particular favourite scarf designer or one that you most admire?
My favourite designer would be DVF. She is incredible. Her attitude to her work and life is a real inspiration to me. She always knew the type of woman she wanted to be and I admire that.
Fabryan is most definitely a fashion brand with a heart, donating a proportion of all sales to the Children of Haggai Foundation, an organisation which helps provide orphans in Nigeria with an education. How did this come about?
I think fashion is so influential within the lives of people. And with great power to influence, comes great responsibility. And I feel enabling the education is so important. With education, children can grow to have better jobs and consequently earn more to provide for their families. I do however think we should never stop learning and should seek to improve ourselves. That is why Fabryan donates to the Children of Haggai.
Finally, with two collections of beautiful scarves under the Fabryan belt, can you offer any tantalising hints as to what to expect from the third accessories line?
Fabryan does of course have some surprises coming. Watch this space!
We shall indeed! Thank you for chatting to the Silk Scarf Aficionado!
