So me @suncaptor and @samcrit put our thinking caps on...

Sam has a lot of the same morals that John does, primarily saving people. Considering Sam was the youngest he never had to take care of his family, so he was fed what hunting was strictly from a perspective that had nothing to do with family.

Dean on the other hand, he was raised with the belief that he had to take care of Sam above all else, family is important, family is everything and anything else can burn. Save Sam above everything and anything.

Which is why Sam is much more like John morally, for example how he goes off of the rails when the concept of revenge is on the table. However Dean never learnt coping strategies like Sam did so he's more like John when it comes to emotional intelligence.

The main difference between the two stands which is what they themselves see to be evil.

It's primarily the difference between the way they were taught and the way they tried to learn themselves after the fact.

Which I think the reason why Sam ended up so healthy compared to his family, was because he was the youngest and was kept out of the loop. He met other people, had a lot of influence outside of the family, saw the world in a light that Dean didn't get the opportunity of seeing.

John raised both Sam and Dean, so his attributes and characteristics will be present in both of them no matter how much they deny it. They're like him and nothing like him respectfully in their own ways. And they definitely take turns showing the characteristics throughout the series.

Of course, Sam is sexy and he does that on his own, it's a trait he learned personally.
