Which Superman theme is your particular favourite? (If the answer is - as one suspects it might be - "John Williams" then may I please ask which is your second favourite, as I already know EXACTLY why Mr William's opus is Brilliant due to having functional eardrums, a heartbeat and an abiding fondness for Big Blue!).

I love the Williams march, but I’m pretty sure it’ll always be second in my heart to this:

I guess it’s a matter of Williams’ song, while uplifting and fun, clearly holding as a primary concern above all else trying to let you know how majestic and important Superman is. Not surprising, as everyone involved with that film was surely hyper-aware that they were making the first big-screen adaptation - on a scale never attempted before (aside from Star Wars, which came out while they were still filming) - of a character who’d already been an ubiquitous American icon for almost half a century, but while it’s excellent in certain contexts, it doesn’t exactly feel all-purpose. The theme from the Flesicher shorts by Sammy Timberg is plenty impressed with him too, but it mainly just sounds happy to see him, y’know? Williams theme is the music of a Superman soaring through the clouds and being amazing, Timberg’s is for a Superman who’s just wrapped up an adventure and is leaping off to go save the day again. Both perfect for what they are, but I think the latter is a little more direct about who he is as a character, as opposed to an icon.
