With the Jewish holiday of Purim coming up in a week, I thought it was time to start our next holiday book roundup! Purim is a fabulous festival holiday, with costume dress-up, delicious treats, and wonderful celebratory traditions including the giving of mishloach manot (also called shalach manot, or gifts of food) to friends and family. We read Megillat Esther, the story of Queen Esther and how she saved the Jewish people, in synagogue, and often have carnivals and parties to celebrate. Like most books in Sylvia Rouss's Sammy Spider series, "Sammy Spider's First Purim" (2000) uses tiny Sammy's perspective of the Shapiro's household to view and explain the preparations for the Purim holiday, with a bit of spidery adventure thrown in!! A great story for introducing little ones to the basics of Purim.
