Tendrils of white leaked from between Jessie’s lips as she sat alone in the garage, gaze distant as she thought through the talk she was about to have with her son about the gun she’d discovered tucked under his pillow. At first she hadn’t known whether to be outraged or upset that her little boy had gotten his hands on something so dangerous, but after sitting down to really think about it, she’d decided that sitting him down to talk would turn out better rather than jumping to conclusions.
The click of the front door opening draws her back to reality and, before whoever walked through the door could find her, she sucked down the last of the nicotine and held her breath for a good few moments before exhaling slowly, the toxic smoke dancing in mesmerizing clouds before her eyes . “Sammy, is that you?” she called, fingers hastily tapping her cigarette against the bottom of the ash tray before rising to her feet.
