Decorative Sunday: A 19th Century Trade Periodical
Today we highlight images from Decoration in Painting, Sculpture, Architecture & Art Manufactures, a periodical published in London through the 1880s (later under the title Decoration and Art Trades’ Review). Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington printed this 1881 edition full of images, articles, and occasional poems out of their Fleet Street offices. Sampson Low (1797-1886), who founded the firm in 1848 as Sampson Low, Son & Co, had a career in bookselling, circulating libraries, and publishing that spanned the better part of the 19th century. The company published its last work in 1969.
