Today was a good day. Ellie didn’t find herself walking into the cafeteria very often. At least, not on her own. Grabbing a tray, she grabbed a few things. An orange, a granola bar, carrots and celery sticks. She even splurged and got some humus for her veggies. She took a seat in the corner of the cafeteria and began to pick absently at the veggies.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten this much food. She tried to tune out the nagging voice of her mother. ‘You think anyone would be attracted to you if you eat like that?’ She could imagine her mother saying. Ellie winced, almost shrinking away from the food on the table. No no. Her mother was not here. She wasn’t here. She hadn’t seen her in a year. Not since Eve told her to get out of there and set her up with a small studio apartment.
Ellie owed Eve Sansby a lot. She’d done so much for her. It was thanks to Eve that she had a genuine chance to be a real designer. It was thanks to Eve that Ellie was here trying to make a difference. She’d never been much of a fighter. Sure. She was adept with a bow and arrow, but she wasn’t a fighter. She didn’t like the idea of hurting anyone. Not even a monster. But the mist support, that was an interesting idea. Let her help without having to fight.
Ellie nibbled at her celery, dipping it into her humus. That’s when something caught her. No. Not something, someone. She looked up, squinting at the back of the person. He looked so familiar, he looked like- Sam. The person turned around. It was Sam. Ellie was just staring, celery suspended between her lips and the humus. To be honest, he was the last person she expected to see here.
Snapping back to herself, Ellie fussed with her hair, pulling the blonde curls over her shoulder, she looked down at herself. Oh she shouldn’t have eaten. She’d have been so lovely if she hadn’t….
'That’s never going to work. He never thought you were worth his time. He just pitied you.’
