MORE THAN A PRETTY FACE

The poverty of production need not imply a poverty of the imagination

Defying Emily
I’m a self confessed movie buff. I just love it when a film is carefully portrayed with much skill and art; like when the cinematography, script, genre, actors, era, underlying themes and symbols all come together to create an indulgently satisfying movie experience. For me, an interesting film has to do 3 things to a person; either it introduces a new set of belief or concept, convince a change of mindset, or stir up an emotion to make it more personal and relative. One example is that chick-lit/chick flick The Devil wears Prada which has always been a favorite (especially way back my tween years). For it will always affect me like the third one. Yes, it stirred up my emotion but double yes, I surely felt related to the movie.
Besides my perpetual admiration for Anne Hathaway, of her versatility and class as an actress, it was her role in the movie as an ‘Emily’ – my own tag as a stereotype secretary, that I had come to love and now appreciate the most. I realized how mentally challenging and physically demanding it is to be an Emily. And although I don’t have a boss like a Miranda Priestly, thank God! (mine is as amazing and extraordinary but an opposite from being devilish hahaha!) I also know for a fact that I should be doing more than just being your typical secretary.
Like Andy (Anne Hathaway’s character in TDWP), I also see myself being the free-spirited, artistically inclined, sometimes stubbornly opinionated but surprisingly resilient and persistent secretary. I tell myself just like how I think Andy is telling herself too, that I should be the best Emily that I could become if not yet fully achieve my dream career now (like her is associated with writing and journalism). It dawned in to me that everything has its own time and that being an Emily isn’t so bad as to opening up a future, advancing career. It opens new doors for opportunities. It is a promising ground that teaches the value of a sharp mind with a humble personality.
Besides, all the perks and privileges are just quite enriching. What with all the pretty dresses, cool people, beautiful places and experiences right? A day in the life of an Executive Secretary will never be as ordinary.
I am defying Emily. I refuse to stagnate and act out of mediocrity. I choose to be an Andy. Cheers to being the best that I can be!
