philsandifer's passing observation, in the recent post on his "real" blog on Night of the Doctor that under Davies and Moffat companion acquisition is always a seduction, made me notice that that's another significant difference between twentieth century Doctor Who and twenty-first century Doctor Who. Few of the "classic" Doctor Who companions were invited aboard. One or two were wished on the Doctor by someone he couldn't argue with, and at least one was told no and ignored it. But almost all either were stowaways or mistook the TARDIS for a real Police Box (or, in the case of Sarah Jane, both).
