Gudrun Sjödén - In the studio: Digital fashion show | Winter 2020
Once In A Lifetime by hpd-fotografy Via Flickr: Midsummer in Iceland. We didn't have the best conditions most of the time. But there was this one night when the sunset was just crazy. And we happend to be just at the right place at that time: Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Not only did we have this amazing sunset, but also there was this fantastic cloud formation, lit up in pink and orange by the low sun, AND those illuminated clouds reflected perfectly in the still water of the lagoon, AND some of the icebergs lit up like burning crystals. That you are so totally at the right place at the right time doesn't happen very often. Maybe only once in a lifetime. Ellinor Miranda Salome Olovsdotter, aka “Elliphant” impresses her loyal following at New York’s Webster Hall on Saturday April 30th…
Swedish singer and songwriter Elliphant played her special blend of pop, EDM and dancehall to an enthusiastic crowd Saturday night at New York City’s gothic Webster Hall. The Marlin Room stage set with the giant inflatable of #Blisseh, its heart beating to the thumping and a symbol of #Elliphant’s creative imagination. Blisseh is rumored to be the driving force behind, “Living Life Golden,” her new release, a mix of genres and guest artists such as Major Lazer, Skrillex, Norwegian superstar MØ and Azealia Banks. Saturday night, Elli took the stage wearing recently chopped locks under a baseball cap, worn backwards, of course, dressed in black sports bra and leggings. She opened with the first track from Living Life Golden with, “Step Down..” I'm home, home alone I call, call again you not answering And I know You couldn't, you wouldn't dare To tell me I win this, you swear You busy but I know you don't care So don't cry man, cause I just wanted a friend tonight You hot, I'm cold that's why I Thought we could make a cloud but You can't get no higher Fuck it, you're not my type at all. …Why don’t you just step down?
—Elliphant summed up in one stanza and watch the music video of a dinner party out of control. It is hilarious and Elli is magic in front of the camera.
Saturday night’s set was tight; “Look Like You Love It,” “Down on Life,” “One More,”her duet with the Danish sensation, MØ and the album’s title track, “Living Life Golden.” The Swedish singer adressed the audience a few times, kissed a lot of men in the front and gave her fans a glimpse into her headspace, something I’ve never witnessed before: “I like to fuck,” she said. “I like it a lot. (audience laughs) For awhile, it was the best way for me to meet people. (everybody laughs again) But always respect your partner, no matter what. Even if it’s only one night, respect.” The crowd erupts and Elli launches into “Only Getting Younger,” middle fingers in the air, everybody singing along, “fuck tomorrow, we’re only getting younger.” I wish. As the oldest person there, I can attest to the truth that, you’re not getting any younger and one day you will look back on your days in the clubs as some of the foggiest memories left. Sorry my Millenial friends but it’s completely true and surely has something to do with alcohol and the aging process, (which can get dicey when it comes to remembering lyrics and where you were when you were twenty. ) Back to Elliphant, late in the show, the audience sang along… So spoon me, spoon me tonight yeah Spoon me, baby, you can't spoon too tight Spoon me, hands on my boobie you Spoon me, big on my booty now…
The video for “Spoon Me” featuring Skrillex was shot in Pakistan and directed by Pakistani-American female director Aisha Linnea, with her husband, cinematographer Shahbaz Shigri. Three transgender Pakistanis are featured in the video, Veena, Saima and Zaini, ”three beautiful and brave people” Elliphant says about them.
Elliphant closed out the show with “Only Getting Younger” and the final, “Too Original,” her song with Major Lazer from “Peace is the Mission,” a jumping, jammin’ tune that helped the crowd get every ounce of energy out of their bodies before Elli’s stage went dark.
I left the show so grateful for my date that night, my college-aged cousin who was the only person I asked to go along with me who said yes. He left a fan and that’s all you can really hope for as an up-and-coming artist from Scandinavia. We will hear more from Elli, you can bet. Her music is honest and unique, she has been embraced by royalty; the biggest producers and the most prolific of her fellow artists.
Blisseh!
