It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it.
I coach screenwriters and creatives. It is my extreme pleasure to attempt to bridge the gap between creativity and organization. It’s a dirty job but someone’s gotta do it.
Many new writers don’t yet understand this process and yet we use it every day; we write with our hearts and revise with our heads because chaos is self-organizing. Our screenplay needs to be organized. However, I find that most beginners focus more on the chaos than in the organizing. Professionals understand that it is in the organizing where you unearth the magic. As a coach, I read lots of potentials. I read ideas that are not yet fully organized, due to a lack of understanding of this very process. Indeed, writing is a process, the kind of process that cannot be rushed. There are no shortcuts. Our work asks us to be patient and nurtures it, every day, bottle-feed if necessary, hold it, cradle it…let it rest.
Every new “Creative” falsely assumes that stream of consciousness creativity comes, fully realized and edited. But that’s not Spirit’s job. Consciousness needs you to edit, in fact, consciousness needs you to be dedicated, fully present, humble and able to see your work, clearly. What your heart sees on the page, is not necessarily “on the page,” and that is why what I do is so important. But that is also why it’s a dirty job. I burst a few balloons.
I was also once a new scribe. I went through all of the above as well. I still do from time to time. This is the nature of the beast. Feedback is essential and sometimes difficult to hear, yet it separates the amateur from the professional. There are rules to this kind of organization that you simply cannot ignore. They are found deep into page 60, where you suddenly get lost, like your hero, and everyone is wondering if you will ever make it in this business.
This is the business of screenwriting. It is a long and winding road that scribe David Seidler knows, well. He first read about King George VI's life after overcoming a stuttering condition during his youth. He started writing the King’s Speech as early as the 1980s, but at the request of the King's widow, postponed work until her death in 2002. Principal photography didn’t take place until 2009.
Seidler eventually won an Oscar for his script. Imagine if he had just given up?

Karen Marie Ørsted
“No matter where in the world I am or who is listening, you want to communicate, to be understood...” Karen Marie Ørsted. Anyone who knows me, will tell you I can get manic about an artist. I have been a music enthusiast all my life. I grew up in the sixties in a house with two teen-aged sisters. I was a college radio manager and a club DJ in the prolific 80‘s. I began my obsession with Scandinavian artists, just before the turn of the last century when I was introduced to Sweden’s KENT. There is just something about artists like Kent, Lykke Li, Miike Snow, Beatrice Eli, Tove Lo and Elliphant that I find fresh and uncompromising.
But there is music out now that seems almost other-worldly because that is just how good it is. Twenty-five-year-old Danish songwriter Karen Marie Ørsted aka MØ’s debut No Mythologies to Follow is a genre unto itself. Much like Halsey, MØ’s lyrics are filled with psycho-twenty-something heartbreak, electronic beats, and distinctive vocals.
But what sets this collection above the latter for me is the incredible design and the structure of every song, the fusion of genre’s; dance, rap, electronic beats and pop into a “sound” that feels fresh and new. Ørsted’s vocal styles range from soulful (Maiden, Dust is Gone) to sixties Motown-ish (Never Wanna Know/Slow Love) to pop (Dummy Head) to rap/electro (Waste of Time.) I am continually amazed by tiny surprises; a pause where you least expect it, choral-style vocals, a sweet rap in the middle of a song, the LAYERS AND LAYERS OF VOCALS, a “HOLLA” here and there, in a lyric phrase sung in a deep octave-gospel-blues style..WHAT????? (SO COOL!) Self-proclaimed, this music came out of a desire for the artist to be emotionally raw and honest, coming straight from a prior stint in a punk band. Growing up Karen experimented with pop, punk and “crunk rap.” But with the help of Danish producer Ronni Vindahl, MØ believes she has settled on a compromised sound, a contradiction in some ways of a well-produced collection of exquisitely simple ideas. She recorded all the vocals for her debut in the bedroom she grew up in, in Copenhagen. More specifically, in a closet in her bedroom in Copehhagen and the work is literally breathtaking.
International superstar producer Diplo proclaimed her to be the very best selection for his huge hit XXX 88 over a host of music’s biggest names. “Lean On,” her single with Major Lazer and DJ Snake has reached a milestone of over 1 billion views on YouTube. Reviews of her live shows have also been extremely favorable. (Check out the live show videos on YouTube, most specifically MØ // Live Roskilde Festival 2013 // FULL SHOW.) MØ’s single “Kamikaze” follows the basic mix of genres; power pop with an electronic pulse, but this time with an Eastern vibe! It is fresh and fun, yet also super sophisticated and smart, (it also features the silliest dance-move in history.) Yes, Karen Marie is authentic. There is no rock-star attitude, maybe more like an over-grown teenager, goofy in her skin at times, but sheer genius, and oh those sparkling, blue eyes! There’s one particular scene with Karen in the fantastic documentary, “NEW BLOOD ”which stands out in my mind; MØ and her band and manager are on the first tour, “No Mythologies” is being mixed and Karen is editing and mixing her vocals on her laptop, in some benign location. A call comes in about an interview request and there’s a discussion. Karen is intent on finishing “Maiden” a very late add-on, (if you can believe this, the best song on the album is a song she wrote and put together on the road, on her laptop.) Karen doesn’t lose her concentration or her composure. She calmly says, “I have to get this done,” puts her headphones back on and gets back to work. There is no question the music is first and foremost, but let me just say, all the album art and all the social media art also comes directly from the singer, herself.
Karen Marie Ørsted is headed out on the road again this summer, and well into the Winter. In my opinion, “MØ” and gal pal #Elliphan are the best thing to happen to music, in years. They have taken the attitude of punk thrown it into a new International genre; electronic, reggae, pop and rap. It is fresh and exciting and I cannot wait for more. I just saw Elli’s show at Webster Hall in NYC and it was so much fun. I can’t wait to see MØ at the Corona Theater in Montreal QC on November 30th, an experience that is way over-due for this fan.

#Elliphant
Ellinor Miranda Salome Olovsdotter, aka “Elliphant” impresses her loyal following at New York’s Webster Hall on Saturday April 30th…
Swedish singer and songwriter Elliphant played her special blend of pop, EDM and dancehall to an enthusiastic crowd Saturday night at New York City’s gothic Webster Hall. The Marlin Room stage set with the giant inflatable of #Blisseh, its heart beating to the thumping and a symbol of #Elliphant’s creative imagination. Blisseh is rumored to be the driving force behind, “Living Life Golden,” her new release, a mix of genres and guest artists such as Major Lazer, Skrillex, Norwegian superstar MØ and Azealia Banks. Saturday night, Elli took the stage wearing recently chopped locks under a baseball cap, worn backwards, of course, dressed in black sports bra and leggings. She opened with the first track from Living Life Golden with, “Step Down..” I'm home, home alone I call, call again you not answering And I know You couldn't, you wouldn't dare To tell me I win this, you swear You busy but I know you don't care So don't cry man, cause I just wanted a friend tonight You hot, I'm cold that's why I Thought we could make a cloud but You can't get no higher Fuck it, you're not my type at all. …Why don’t you just step down?
—Elliphant summed up in one stanza and watch the music video of a dinner party out of control. It is hilarious and Elli is magic in front of the camera.
Saturday night’s set was tight; “Look Like You Love It,” “Down on Life,” “One More,”her duet with the Danish sensation, MØ and the album’s title track, “Living Life Golden.” The Swedish singer adressed the audience a few times, kissed a lot of men in the front and gave her fans a glimpse into her headspace, something I’ve never witnessed before: “I like to fuck,” she said. “I like it a lot. (audience laughs) For awhile, it was the best way for me to meet people. (everybody laughs again) But always respect your partner, no matter what. Even if it’s only one night, respect.” The crowd erupts and Elli launches into “Only Getting Younger,” middle fingers in the air, everybody singing along, “fuck tomorrow, we’re only getting younger.” I wish. As the oldest person there, I can attest to the truth that, you’re not getting any younger and one day you will look back on your days in the clubs as some of the foggiest memories left. Sorry my Millenial friends but it’s completely true and surely has something to do with alcohol and the aging process, (which can get dicey when it comes to remembering lyrics and where you were when you were twenty. ) Back to Elliphant, late in the show, the audience sang along… So spoon me, spoon me tonight yeah Spoon me, baby, you can't spoon too tight Spoon me, hands on my boobie you Spoon me, big on my booty now…
The video for “Spoon Me” featuring Skrillex was shot in Pakistan and directed by Pakistani-American female director Aisha Linnea, with her husband, cinematographer Shahbaz Shigri. Three transgender Pakistanis are featured in the video, Veena, Saima and Zaini, ”three beautiful and brave people” Elliphant says about them.
Elliphant closed out the show with “Only Getting Younger” and the final, “Too Original,” her song with Major Lazer from “Peace is the Mission,” a jumping, jammin’ tune that helped the crowd get every ounce of energy out of their bodies before Elli’s stage went dark.
I left the show so grateful for my date that night, my college-aged cousin who was the only person I asked to go along with me who said yes. He left a fan and that’s all you can really hope for as an up-and-coming artist from Scandinavia. We will hear more from Elli, you can bet. Her music is honest and unique, she has been embraced by royalty; the biggest producers and the most prolific of her fellow artists.
Blisseh!
