In better news, rematch season!
Mayer-Ryan 1 was a great fight so happy they’re running it back.
Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer | Fight Highlights
Absolute banger! If you missed it live, go watch the whole thing. It’s only 20 minutes and it was fun all the way through. Turns out when Mayer isn’t fighting someone literally half her size, she can be forced into fire fights by pressure.
Sandy Ryan vs Jessica McCaskill | Fight Highlights
We got championship boxing at MSG this Friday (Sept 27).
Women’s WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan (7-1-1) will look to defend her title against Mikaela Mayer (19-2) as Mayer looks to become a 2 division world champion. Also on the card are Xander Zayas and Bruce Carrington.
More women’s boxing news. Sandy Ryan to defend her welterweight title at the Theater at MSG in NYC against Mikaela Mayer.
We got some pretty good fights going down in boxing today.
First off, we have Zhang Zhilei vs Joe Joyce 2. Big old heavyweight fight, literally. WBO interim heavyweight title up for grabs. Also, Anthony Yarde on the undercard. For my fellow Americans, card starts around 2pm ET on ESPN+.
On the second card, from Orlando, we have rising super lightweight prospect Richardson Hitchins taking on former world title challenger Jose Zepeda. Zepeda is a recent opponent of champion Regis Prograis so a win would be a huge boost for the rising Hitchins. On the undercard, we have a fight for the title of undisputed at women’s welterweight. Jessica McCaskill will attempt to win her 4th belt back as she faces newly crowned champion Sandy Ryan. Also Conor Benn makes his first appearance since popping for PED use. Card starts at 8pm ET.
Sandy Ryan and Jessica McCaskill fight to... a split draw?????!!
That is by far the worst scorecards I have EVER seen in a fight. Ryan won this fight. Outright. No question. Even the one scorecard that was 6-4 for Ryan was wrong because I don't know where you give McCaskill 4 rounds.
Really fun fight. Ryan started off with the amateur boxing pedigree stuff. Lateral movement. Making McCaskill miss, chase, etc. Great work behind the jab. But at a certain point, she just realized McCaskill could not hurt her and she was physically stronger than Jess so she just started getting into long pocket exchanges with McCaskill. And tbf, I don't think that was a smart move. But she definitely won those rounds too. I don't think there's much argument for McCaskill winning 5 let alone 6 or 7 rounds like the one judge said she did.
McCaskill boxes like someone who was taught good fighters move their head but also never watched film that was below the waist. You can dip, slip and shoulder roll all you want but if you're feet off angle, you're not landing counters and you're in danger of being hit by someone who is. Ryan is getting move leverage on her shots as a result of better foot positioning.
