i will say about sangfielle and this has always and will continue to bug me (in a minor way.) is people calling each others characters friends and i KNOW why because it's the standard for a ttrpg party (usually) and the players are friends but these characters are truly the most coworkers ever. of all time possibly

Sylvia (as Hazard): Uh, this...so, did you make this, or...? Jack (as Pickman): No, no. I found it in a library.  Sylvia (as Hazard): [uninterested] Okay. Keith (as Lyke): And— sorry, no offense to you. I'm sure that you know a lot about a lot of things. Why did you think they would know about this? Sylvia (as Hazard): I'm also curious about that, actually. Jack (as Pickman): You're traveling up and down the river.  Keith (as Lyke): Mm. Jack (as Pickman): Spend a lot of time with strange people. This boat seems to be, uh...  Jack: Like, Pickman just gestures at like the drapes hanging all over the… Jack (as Pickman): We were led here by a moth built like a machine. Sylvia (as Hazard): Gosh, you two sure are an interesting pair, huh? You know, I gotta be honest, I'm not sure where you could offload something like this. It's interesting enough, but, um...I don't know, maybe try talking to some Kay'van about it? There's a little bit of hints here and there that makes me think at least they might be able to make some heads or tails out of this. But um...I'm just not much of a book learner, I guess. You know?

Keith: This is my every domain book.  Jack (as Pickman): Huh. Sylvia (as Hazard): Oh, wow. Austin: As a reminder, it is a transcript of a discussion, of a long series of discussions with a Carpana sage from before the Panic. Sylvia: Are you like letting me like flip through it? Keith: Yeah, sure. Sylvia (as Hazard): See, now this? This is interesting stuff right here.  Jack (as Pickman): Hey.  Sylvia (as Hazard): Mm-hmm? Jack (as Pickman): No, I'm just...we can't all have Lyke’s book of everything. [Keith laughs softly] Where did you get this?  Keith (as Lyke): Library.  Jack (as Pickman): Oh, come on. [several people laugh loudly] Sylvia (as Hazard): All right. Well.

Jack: Hmm. Yeah, I mean, I'll just— I'll take the loss. Pickman is now in a very bad mood between all of this stuff with Duvall and all of this, the Duvall and Lyke and Virtue stuff, and then having to get on a strange boat. Austin: Mm-hmm. Jack: And then meeting this person, and then getting slighted with the...you know, Lyke’s book is demonstrably better. [Sylvia laughs]  Austin: Wow. [Keith laughs]  Jack: And now there's something screwed up going on with these cards. So I think I, you know, Pickman just sort of goes quiet and sulks and plays the lesson.

largely Sangfielle just isn't very scary to me, even as it plays in the horror space and with its themes, and often with horror I react more with delight or interest than fear anyways (like why stuff works or where it pulls from or oh that's such a good concept etc.). But there's a few things that do just genuinely get me as in make me queasy or uncomfortable, and I think anything around loss of control of your body and then also specifically being instrumentalized is just really huge. The big one is the Red Zephyr obv (1 ½ more episodes <3) and then there's a bit in Hazards epilogue directly connected to that I also really love, even though it's not a big moment or anything. I am thinking about it just now because they found scarecrow Bucho in the fields and I haven't yet gotten to (& don't remember) if there was a particular reason for that beside recognizing Bucho as a threat and just wanting to be cruel but the image is just so good & terrible of these wide yellow fields with the sun beating down & you're put up as a scarecrow, awake and dying.

I also don't remember a lot of details about how Alaway's whole deal worked so I won't go guessing but I'll have some more thoughts re: this after I finish The Candle Factory arc. (Feeling similarly about Alaways reappearance in Just Returns, of which I remember even less(?). Definitly relevant to this, but I couldn't say much. Some of the latter arcs are weirdly fuzzy in my mind.)

(also stepping outside of Sangfielle: Gur Sevraq (!). notably, the PZN30 reveal hit me harder in that way than anything in Sangfielle (sans Red Zephyr) had at that point. aauuugh. gur)

kinda wild how good pickman is just immediately. it's fully possible i'm just blessed by knowledge but I have to like, keep myself from sighing dreamily any time jack has her do literally anything

do specific people pay a shape knight to stop a train, and if other people are on that train too they're just sort of lucky? was this ever mentioned or described closer like what's the process. do shape knights work pro bono
