Ikuta Shrine (生田神社), Kobe (near Sannomiya Station)

It's one of the oldest shrines in Japan, founded in the 3rd century. According to the Nihongi, it was founded by the Empress Jingu when she was shipwrecked returning from Korea. Ikuta Shrine (生田神社), Kobe (near Sannomiya Station).

She's a controversial figure because she's important in Japanese history and mythology (how much is true isn't clear), but this was used as justification for Imperial Japan's invasion of Korea and colonialism.

The shrine is for Watahirume, goddess of the rising sun and weaving, thus associated with connections, such as business and relationships, which people go there to pray about.

The smaller gates lined up lead to the Inari Shrine, for the goddess of rice.

1st Exam Results, Good Food and Good Friends

After two weeks of nervous thumb-twiddling, my Japanese school results are in – and I’ve passed the lot! 🎊

Reading, my old nemesis, put up a fight, but I still walked away with a respectable B. (Not bad considering I’d already resigned myself to a pity C.)

But the real highlight? I scored an S in Presentation. Yes, apparently there’s a grade beyond A. Move over perfection, I’ve unlocked “Super Mode.” To make things even stranger, I was awarded 101 points out of 100. I’m not sure if that means I broke the system or if the teacher was just feeling generous, but I’ll claim it as evidence of raw charm.

Naturally, I went out with friends to celebrate – because surviving a term of kanji-induced trauma deserves a proper reward.

The grades made something crystal clear: my strengths are holding, but my reading and freely expressing myself are glaring weak spots. So, next term, it’s going to be a case of double effort, extra hours, and probably crying into grammar flashcards. But hey – at least now I know what to tackle head-on.
