I have to tell ya, every time your tumblr handle shows up on my dash, I hear it in my head the exact way Boo pronounces it in Monsters Inc. This often cracks me up. so thanks for that!
MIKE WAZOWSKI !!!!
I love that lol. Just picture me as a little boo running up to you on your dash yelling my own url
(Sort of?) related? But your blog title makes me think of that “putting the cart before the horse” saying but um. Sans cart. So I just picture a horse with like, black dashes outlining where a cart SHOULD BE but is not lmao
Hey, I really love what you posted about tragedies and catharsis…I can relate a lot. I’m curious, if you’re willing to share, what’s on your Tragic Media List?
I would remind that what I said in that post was that it is the Trauma Media List, not the Tragic Media List. Many of them contain tragedy, yes, or are tragedies in the classic sense, but they are the list they are because I connect to them for deeply personal reasons. Consequently - and probably unsurprisingly - there are parts of that list I am hesitant to share, not for the fact they might reveal something about me - my blogging and my fic does that on my own - but that some might cause people to guess at me and guess wrong, and I dislike that. The contents of my Trauma Media List is generally shared with friends who know me well, and thus understand the position I'm coming from in approaching these pieces of media.
If you do want specifically tragic media, however I am happy to recommend several that turn up on my list. Rogue One is a gorgeous tragedy, every character doing only as they can do and still be themselves; they work for hope even knowing they will likely never see its outcome - may never even know if they achieved what they sought. Devilman Crybaby ripped my heart out so utterly that while I've rewatched parts of it I've not yet been able to bring myself to reconsume it in its entirety.
On a more expected and classical basis - Macbeth is a solid one that I like that in many ways follows the same path as it's grand predecessor Oedipus Tyrannus. People seek to at once fulfil and avoid prophecies, to find their fate and evade it and in being who they are, in engaging with the prophecies spoken at all, bring about the outcome. The agency within a narrative that, given the nature of prophecy, almost seems to deny agency is something I adore, though Macbeth and Oedipus are not things I am prone to rereading or -watching.
I do however return to Bakkhai on a more regular basis, even if only in fragmentary fashion. There is a tragedy going on there, between the story of the god and because of the story of the god, ordinary people up against something they cannot best, and the story hardly affords them sympathy for they faced down a god that proclaimed himself a god and what else could they expect to happen but what eventually did?
Something that is on the Trauma Media List that I am willing to share is Fiallerill's Double Agent Vader series; Anakin Skywalker's fall into Darth Vader is itself a tragedy and this story takes that and twists that and while it provides a kind of hope it also exposes it's own kind of tragedy and grief within it's confines. This is the series I mentioned of someone trapped by both their own choices and the machinations of another - in the end, we all are to some degree or another. Other's choices affect us and within those spaces we make our own choices, and the degree of control we actually have over our own lives, given the nature of society, is debateable. And, further, sometimes we may make choices, or believe we make choices, but we operate within a system, be that societal or within a social game another has set up before us, into which we can largely only fail in a few select ways, the majority of which leave us at their mercy.
There are other works too on my personal list, fanworks and formal media both, but these are the ones I feel most comfortable sharing.
Here’s a short prompt! Lena walks in to a room, sees Kara freeze and look guilty. Kara: I can explain...
“I can explain...” Kara said around a mouthful of beef, her hand still in the baking dish Lena pulled out of the oven only minutes ago.
“You promised you’d be good this time, Kara. You know how important this dinner party is to me.”
“I know, but I’m just so hungry.”
“You ate six grilled cheese sandwiches less than an hour ago, which I made for you specifically so you would not touch my roast before the party.”
“But Lena, it smells so good.”
“Don’t ‘but Lena’ me. I’ve been working so hard to make sure this party goes off without a hitch because I want to impress your family, and the only thing I asked you to do is stay out of the food until dinner is served.”
“You also made me clean.”
“Get out of my kitchen.”
“Lena I—”
“Out!”
Kara made herself scarce before Lena threw something at her, retreating to the living room just in time for Alex and Kelly to arrive.
“Hey guys,” Kara said, opening the door. “Lena is in the kitchen being really mad and sexy right now, just, um, as a warning.”
Alex sighed. “What did you do?”
“I may have taken a tiny little nibble of pot roast after I promised I wouldn’t.”
“I’ll go help Lena.” Kelly pushed the flower arrangement they brought into Alex’s arms. “You two stay in here where you can’t cause any more problems.” She shook her head and confiscated the bottle of wine Alex was holding before disappearing into the kitchen.
“Come on dumbass, let’s go have a drink on the balcony.”
“All the alcohol is in the kitchen and I’m afraid to go in there.”
Alex bent down and produced a flask from within her boot. “Well, then, it’s a good thing I came prepared,” she said, unscrewing the lid with a smirk.
They leaned over the railing, passing the flask back and forth.
“Ugh,” Kara groaned after taking a swig, her face contorting in disgust, “I don’t know how you drink this stuff. It’s vile.”
“The way you take your coffee is vile,” Alex said, snatching the flask from Kara. “This stuff,” she shook it at her, “is expensive and delicious. You just have the palate of a six year old.”
“You’re rude.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
Ooh, how about scsw (supercorp star wars)?
scsw?!? I would die for this AU already.
loll this one. there’s not a lot, but here’s a snippet:
The dual suns beat against her back, sand getting into her mouth despite the wrappings around her head, leaving her throat dry and aching for a drink.
But a promise was a promise.
“I’m sorry, I don’t want to be a drag, but do you even know where you’re going?” one of her companions asked, looking more than a little frazzled, his hair matted against his head, skin covered with dirt and what he claimed was grease from his destroyed starfighter. The other man is much more composed, the only evidence of anything strenuous having happened in the last few days the weariness of his eyes and the slight slouch of his strong shoulders.
I haven’t worked on it in a long long time. I’m pretty sure the two guys are Winn and James and Kara is on a mission to find Lena? but I don’t remember and I don’t have notes for it ha! I wanna watch the movies again one weekend to get some inspiration
Made up title: The Right Hand Doesn’t Know What the Left Hand is Doing (and the Left Hand Doesn’t Care)
Lena’s job is a very, very simple one.
She sits at her cubicle, waits for a task to be dropped into her in-tray, peruses the file, marks up said file with her notes, then drops it into her out-tray to be sent off to wherever it needs to go.
This has been her established routine for the past 10 years, and it’s one she intends on maintaining for the following 10 years, and then some. Until things change, of course.
The day that things change, it’s not for the better, nor for the worse. Just different, really. Changed. And Lena doesn’t even notice it at first.
She just sends off her file as per usual, but for some reason, it ends up right back in her in-tray within a few minutes. It’s not unheard of for documents to come back for a second or even a third assessment—the cerebral departments are known for their commitment to collaboration—though Lena rarely gets one returned to her so promptly.
But still, it isn’t quite out of the ordinary, so Lena reviews the assignment again. Notes how a few of her comments have been scribbled out. Notes the sloppy penmanship of the second commenter. The unprofessional green ink. The scrawl of hastily jotted initials alongside the seal of the Right Brain branch in the bottom lefthand corner.
According to this KD—KO? KQ, maybe?—character, Lena’s take had been way too cold and logical, as if that weren’t the goddamn point of it all in the first place. Lena rolls her eyes, but makes some adjustments to her previous annotations and slaps the file back into her out-tray.
It comes back practically in a blink of an eye. This time, the file sports whole sections of Lena’s commentary crossed out in bright green, with pink hearts drawn all over the page. At the bottom, in the right brain employee’s messy hand reads, It’s… a… CRUSH! and yet another highly unnecessary seal is stamped beside it.
Lena can’t help the scowl that comes over her face. But she drops it, and lets it drop into her out-tray untouched. But not before making a copy to show all her fellow left-brainers when they go out for drinks at the end of the day. And she makes sure to get it in color. She knows that Andrea in particular would really appreciate the full extent of her disgust at the appalling taste in pen color.
Hello can I ask what freezerburn fic you're talking about? :)
let your demons run (M, 46k, raven/anya)
a brighter love (M, 35k, weiss/yang)
psalm of the wild built is so good!!! I’m glad someone else appreciates it. I’d like to give a copy to practically everyone I know
A friend of mine demanded that I read it and it took me two months between brain gremlins and lack of time but I finally read it and I had to stop reading it because I wasn't ready to openly weep in a laundromat.
I have since given it as assigned reading to everyone I know.
