Well, it is not often that I get to add my own records to my giant state beetle checklist, but this might indeed be a county record for me, and is a species not often seen in my state. This is a Hickory Saperda, Saperda discoidea, and is quite wonderful, as all longhorned beetles are :-).

The larvae of these beetles feed ln dead/dying pine, elm, hickory, etc. First time seeing these guys so it was a challenge to ID!

Really glad this elm borer (Saperda tridentata) was still at the light when I went to shut things down in the wee hours, because I totally boffed the shots I took of it during the first round.

Very cool poplar borer (Saperda calcarata) from Mark Mello’s Cerambycid collection. Worth zooming in on the original size, so you can see the pale orange markings and black polka dots up close.
