Words that seem so far out of place— belonging in a world of fantasy that she still couldn’t believe she had apparently become part of. They should be jarring, to hear about a heart being stolen, but instead... she finds herself focusing on the brief flash of the downward tug of his lips.
He always seems to try and portray himself as happy and wise, but she knew better. Somehow, she knew better,
“Do I have any choice but to trust you?” Her words lack any solid bite. She was adaptable— that had proven itself time and time again, going further back than she would even remember. “You haven’t stabbed me yet, which is more than you can say for me.”
Despite her words, there’s a hint of an amused smile tugged at a corner of her lips. For all the hell of a situation she’d found herself in, she looked relatively relaxed even as he stepped closer.
He still felt familiar, and it was the irony of his words saddled with that feeling that made her laugh.
“Every time I look at you, it’s like my mind is trying to solve a puzzle with the pieces missing. It feels like you have those missing pieces, and yet I’m hardly any closer to having you hand them over than when I got here.”
