A little tale of DirkJane and birthdays.
Jane sighed. Five minutes left until her birthday was over. Five more gruesome minutes. She was surprised it was so cold on LOPAN at night. Roxy had even given her a coat as she mulled over the days events.
Five months since they came in. They had celebrated all of their birthdays together. It was fun, laughs and jokes and food were exchanged. Hell, they even drunk at Roxy's.
But when it came down to Jane's lone birthday in April, no one gave a fuck.
Okay, that was a stretch. Roxy loved her to bits and threw her the party, and she couldn't ask for a better bestie. But Jake decided to be a total jerk and bring up his relationship issues to her ON HER DAY. She let out another sigh of exasperation and balled her fists. God she just wanted SOMETHING TO PUNCH, or something to skewer!!!
Oh and don't even get her started on Dirk.
That guy didn't even bother showing up! Not even a 'Happy Birthday' through Pesterchum. It just stung that her best friends seemed to want to bring up their drama on her birthday, the one day a year that was supposed to be all for herself.
She didn't think she was being selfish in that retrospect; there should be at least one day in every persons life where they dont want to be treated like shit and just be told that their being there was a great thing.
Obviously, they didn't think so. She shut her eyes, a few tears falling down her face. Jesus, just a few more minutes and she can go back to numbing all the pain. Just a little--
She looked down at her headset, sniffling as she heard the automated voice call out the chumhandle, thinking it was Roxy telling her to come in before she got sick.

TT: Hey Jane, do you have a minute?
GG: I guess. What is it?
TT: I wanted to show you something. Turn around.
She turned her body and saw the silhouette and the blond hair that belonged to their resident cool kid. She frowned and turned back to face the pyramids.
"What do you want." She asked curtly, rubbing away the tears she had shed just before he arrived.
He didn't say a word but sat down beside her and kept his gaze on the pyramids as well.
"I wanted to apologize for being such an ass today. I was busy with--
"Busy with raiding those stupid tombs, too busy to even wish me a happy birthday. Too busy with making out with Jake and making up for the arguments and crap that you've been busy with for weeks now!!!" She blurted out angrily, hot tears filling her eyes and rolling down her cheeks. Why was he here?! Why was he making things worse!!! She was so fucking done with him and Jake!!!
As she moved to get up, she felt something in her lap. She looked down and her eyes widened as she saw a familiar metal bunny.
"S-Sebastian?!" The rabbit tilted its head at her and patted her cheeks. She sniffled and turned to look at Dirk, who was now only gazing at her. Her cheeks flushed red as she felt his intense stare through those shades of his.
"I was busy with finishing up this little guy. It's not the same as the original, but I figured it would be a good birthday pres--" He was cut off as she tackled him, nearly tossing them both off the roof. He heard and felt the quiet sobs wracking her body.
"Yo-you jerk! You couldnt--couldnt even tell me that over pesterchum?! I thought you had forgotten all about today!!!" He wrapped his arms around her and pet her hair, taking in the familiar scent of sugar and flour from her.
"Don't you ever think for a second that I'd forget your birthday, Jane." He held her close and continued to dote on her. She needed this. He had been pretty elusive lately, so he accepted that she would be upset with him.
"I'm sorry about Jake. I really am. I was hoping to get to talk to him in person so that we could sort this all out. I didn't think he'd take my invites and our relationship to you Jane." He muttered, his arms tightening a bit around her. "I just... I was trying to break up with him." She pulled back for a second, eyes wide and confused with tears running down her cheeks.
"What? Why? You always said you couldn't be happier with him!" He pulled her into his lap and wiped away her tears gently.
"That was a lie. There were definitely times when I was happier. And all those times were with you. Raiding the pyramids, going through the tombs, helping you with all the puzzles the others were too busy to deal with... Those were always the best times of my life and my time with you." She bushed brightly, the redness barely visible from the dim lighting.
"I guess what I'm trying to say is if you'd like to try...dating the worlds biggest douche." He glanced down at the bunny that was trying to climb onto her lap.
She placed her hands over her mouth when she heard his confession of sorts. She had given up long ago on her crush with Jake, and had often fought with herself because she moved on to Dirk, of all people. She felt so horrible for liking him, but she couldn't help and keep those memories of them together under lock and key in her heart. She had it bad for Dirk Strider, but she wouldn't jeopardize his and Jake's relationship for her own selfishness.
"Only if you're comfortable dating the most selfish girl here." She mumbled, pulling the rabbit to her. "I think I'll have to name you something different..." She felt his hand on her chin and let it guide her eyes back to his.
"Happy birthday Jane." He kissed her lightly on her lips, sending warmth into her cheeks again. There had been only a few moments left, and honestly...
He turned the worst day yet into the best one.
