Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 rounded up)

This book had so many things going for it, but there were parts that made me hesitate to give it a higher rating. Most Likely is a surprisingly solid read. We follow four best friends who are all trying to juggle applying to college, misguided romances, and friendship drama while there's this overarching mystery of sorts with one of them being "most likely" to become president of the United States one day which is presented in the prologue. There were parts that made me smile and I rooted for all the girls, but some elements were just not it for me.

Mostly, I love that this novel is a good representation of what high school life is actually like. The girls were diverse and facing real issues such as not being able to afford their dream college or dealing with depression. I liked that those elements were weaved in but not overdone. It makes this novel very appealing to the target audience as many high schoolers will be able to sympathize or relate to the things the characters go through. On the other end, there were some parts of Most Likely that made me roll my eyes to be honest, mostly in terms of character development. For example, Wyatt's character and by extension his relationship with CJ felt very Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace-y to me. That might just be me, but I really think Wyatt could've been developed better as a character since, especially since he played such a big role in CJ's arc. There were also bits of the romance that felt out of place and a tad bit forced such what happened with CJ and Logan that night on the track. Maybe the author was trying to keep readers guessing as to who'll end up president, but it didn't really add much to the plot. The cover is also not my favorite, which is a little nitpicky and didn't affect my review of the book itself. I agree that an artsy cover was the way to go, but honestly the bold stripes and oversimplified faces (wasn't CJ blonde?) aren't too attractive. Overall, this book was more of a comfort read for me personally and didn't do much for me, but the characters are fun and the plot realistic for the most part. If you're looking to lose yourself in an entertaining glimpse into high school life, this is a great read. I also recommend One of Us Is Lying, which has a similar setting/environment but with more emphasis on the mystery.

Am I remembering correctly that Sarah Watson chose not to come back as showrunner because of creative differences? Now that season 2 has ended I am quite curious about what those creative differences were.
