I love losing myself in a book and in these times of doom scrolling it’s tougher. On vacation I also give myself a chance to escape into fiction. I know many read Elena Ferrante before me (there is a TV show!) but this was the first read I loved on holiday. Favourite line: ‘So I was second in everything. I hoped that no one would ever realise it.’ I think we’ve all felt like that—and I love how the book tilts and swings, making it clear both girls feel this way at times and at other times or at the very same time inspire each other. I loathe in fiction when female friendships are reduced to cattiness or bland sisterhood, when they can be such tangled nets of gold and dark. I read an article about women who had known each other from their teens to their 70s, through the deaths of husbands and children. ‘She is the witness of my life’ one said. #MyBrilliantFriend made me grateful for stories and for some of my own brilliant friends. #sarahreesbrennan #thecanaryislands #bookrecommendations #sarahslilescapes https://www.instagram.com/p/Cei_tLErSwC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
