Harvesting pyrethrum in northwest Rwanda. Photo by Sara Terry #saraterry13 @saraterry13 The Rwanda Pyrethrum Project, a $2.4 million project backed by USAID, assisted 5,000 farming households over the past six years, before coming to a conclusion last April. The project involved several trainings on best farming and business practices. Pyrethrum, a plant in the chrysanthemum family, is a natural insecticide. It is an important export for Rwanda. There are over 30,000 growers in the country now, producing 48 metric tons a year, up from 30 metric tons in 2009. #pyrethrum #Rwanda #Africa #naturalinsecticides #insecticides #farming (at Kinigi, Ruhengeri, Rwanda)
Potato harvest, in northwest Rwanda. Surrounded by five volcanos, this region is known for its rich soil -- which yields potato crops three times a year, as well as crops like corn and runner beans. These farmers are waiting for their harvest to be picked up and trucked to Kigali. Photo by Sara Terry #saraterry13 @saraterry13 #potatoes #harvest #volcanicsoil #rwandaagriculture #rwanda #africa
This silverback mountain gorilla is the boss of the Umubano family, one of 19 mountain gorilla families in the Rwanda section of the Virunga Masif, which spreads across three countries, Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC. It is the only place in the world where they are found. They are a highly endangered species, but their numbers are slowly growing thanks to concerted conservation and protection efforts. So, this isn't "everyday" in the normal sense of this feed. It IS "everyday" here in Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda. It was one of the most extraordinary days of my life, to be this close to mountain gorillas. We were with the Kuryama family, which has 13 members. This baby, almost 14 months old is Kanyamahanga, which translates as "the people who come from other countries to see mountain gorillas." Kanyamahanga was named at this year's naming ceremony for 23 babies -- locals help choose the names. This area, which spreads across Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo, is the only place in the world where mountain gorillas are found -- their numbers are slowly rising, to just over 900 this year. Tourism dollars have played an important role in helping support the gorillas and local communities, and have helped decrease poaching in Rwanda. Moto taxi drivers washing their motorcycles in eastern Rwanda. Motos are everywhere, a cheap form of transportation. Rwandan law requires helmets to be worn -- drivers must carry a second helmet in addition to the one they wear, for passengers.
