Sarcococca ruscifolia x S. confusa (Sweet Box)
The Winter Garden
To many people who visit this blog, the term ‘Winter Garden’ must seem like a contradiction in terms. The entire Northern hemisphere is in the grip of winter and, except for Vancouver, the rest of Canada is a land of ice and snow. That being said, Vancouver is having one of the warmest, snow-free winters on record and I’ve been busy documenting every winter-flowering plant I can find.
Sweet Box is so named because of it’s lovely, vanilla-like scent. Some varieties of Sarcococca are short and used as a ground cover but this variety is taller (up to 2 m.) and more hedge-like. Sweet Box is native to the forested mountainsides of Northern China. Landscape gardeners often plant Sweet Box on the shady side of a building and in rainy places, like Vancouver, it requires very little care. As an added bonus; in the summer, it produces attractive black berries.

Sarcococca is a slow growing evergreen shrub that makes an awesome winter-flowering shade plant. Its modest flowers have a pleasant fragrance February-April when there aren't many other blooms around. The monoecious plants (has both male and female reproductive parts) produce small, fleshy blue fruits that each carry 1-3 seeds. Though this plant spreads mostly via stolons, we recently gathered some of its fruit to gather and clean seed for propagation. I will report back with results!

Sarcococcas are not happy with the changes. Too much sun I think. Looking pale and dropping leaves.
Jason brought me a low growing sarcocca which I planted below the new wall.
